It was spring in North Carolina.
The snow had melted away and it was a nice 70° with sunny skies. Matthew and Stephanie were finally starting to have more success now with hunting. They only caught what they could eat since they had no way to store it, but it was still enough. They had been walking for a few miles and had caught one squirrel already and were looking for one more animal to cook.
"How's the ankle doing Steph?'' asked Matthew.
"It's a little sore but I'm okay."
"Do you want to stop?''
"No. We need to find another animal for dinner. If I need a break I'll let you know."
"Okay.'' It had been 2 months since her injury. It healed up nicely. However, she did have a big scar on her ankle from the incident and occasionally it would cause her pain. But other than that she was fine.
The two walked for a little bit longer.
Every once in awhile they would talk, but they wanted to remain quite so animals couldn't hear them.
"Its getting late. Should we head back and see if we catch anything?'' asked Matthew.
"I don't know."
"Maybe we should... Hey Steph. Look" said Matthew pointing to a bush. Steph paused for a moment but then she saw it move too. They both looked at each other and nodded. Stephanie put up her crossbow and they walked cautiously to the bush. Once they approached it Matthew put his hand very gently on top of it. Than with his other hand he counted and mouthed the words one two three. He pulled it back and Steph aimed to fire.
"AHHHHH!!" screamed something from the bush. Stephanie was so startled that she got scared and pulled the trigger. Luckily Matthew immediately pushed Stephanie's aim up and the arrow fired into the tree. Luckily it hit a bird. They both looked at eachother confused and pulled the bush back again. In the bush was a scared little girl. She sat there curled up trying to shield herself from them.
"Please don't hurt me." she said in a scare voice.
"Hey hey hey relax we aren't going to hurt you. We were hunting and thought you were an animal. I fired because of a reflex. I'm sorry. But I can promise you my boyfriend and I won't hurt you." said Steph in a reassuring voice trying to calm her down as she crouched across from her.
"What's your name?" asked Matt as he crouched next to Stephanie.
"Ashlen." she said in a quiet voice.
"Hi Ashlen. I'm Stephanie. And this is Matthew.''
"Ashlen where are your parents? Or the group you are traveling with?'' asked Matt. She looked too young to be on her own or to make it this far by herself.
"They're dead. I'm all alone."
"You mean you've made it this far by yourself?" asked Stephanie.
"I've only been on my own for a little while."
"How old are you?" asked Stephanie.
"Umm I don't know. Before this all started I was nine."
"It's April 15."
"Okay then I'm ten. My birthday was on March 23rd."
"Okay. Can you just sit here for a moment? I need to talk to Matthew for a second. But we won't leave. Okay?" she nodded her head. Stephanie and Matthew got up and walked away a bit so she wasn't in earshot.
