It was a cold winter morning when Matthew woke up.
He got up off of the couch and went to warm the furnace. Stephanie was still sound asleep. She looked cold so Matthew went and got the sleeping bag he had, unzipped it, and placed it on her. He then turned to get a can of food for breakfast. That's when he saw how low they were on canned food. He took out a can of pineapple and used that for breakfast. That's when Stephanie woke up. They said good morning and went and sat on the couch together eating the pineapple.
"Man I wonder how long we have been in the apocalypse for?" asked Matthew.
"2 months. One week, and two days." replied Steph.
"Woah. How did you know that?"
"Well I found a journal and pen in the mall. So I kept it and I have been writing in it everyday. I felt like we needed to keep track of time in some way so can keep a bit of reality with us."
"Good Idea"
"Thanks." They chatted for a little bit longer before Matthew brought up what he wanted to say.
"Hey Steph. I was looking this morning and we are all most out of canned food. We need to start hunting now if we want something to eat."
"Okay. Let's set out after we finish eating." They barely left the cabin. They would walk out in the morning when they needed wood from the pile and if they ran low on logs or to practice using their weapons. One morning Steph spotted some zombies and ran inside. She and Matthew were ready for a gun battle but discovered as long as they remained quiet and inside the zombies couldn't sense them. So they went out as little as possible. But now push came to shove and they need food. They stopped having lunch in December as another way to conserve food but that only lasted them so long. Then another thought came to Matthew. Something neither of them have thought of before.
"Also one more thing. And it's about your hair."
"What about it?'' she asked.
"We need to tie it back. If we're gonna be outside more often it should be tied back into like a braid of some sort. That way a zombie doesn't grab it." she paused for a moment.
"Okay. Let's do it right now. Do you know how too?''
"Yes actually."
"Okay.'' Stephanie grabbed some hair ties and bobby pins at the store incase this happened. She sat in front of Matt. He tied her hair back into a neatly braided bun. After she was done she went into the bathroom to get a good look at it.
"So what do you think?"
"I really like it. Thank you."
"No problem."
After they got ready they left the house.
Matthew brought his gun and Step brought her crossbow. They hiked for a few miles and saw nothing.
"God there is nothing out here" said Matthew
"Will find food we just have to be patient" said Steph.
"I know I know. I'm just worried about how will be eating."
"What do you mean?"
"Well if and when we find food it will most likely be meat from birds, rabbits, squirrels, and if we're lucky maybe some deer. But what about fruits and vegetables. Not all of the cans we have remaining are even that. So what do we do when we run out?"
"Will figure that out when we get to it. But right now we need to make sure we are at least eating. Plus I am sure if we travel far enough will find edible plants. And then will be okay--". Steph immediately stopped talking and Matthew looked at her questionably. She then slowly pointed her crossbow at a tree. When Matthew looked up he saw what she saw. A bird was up there on a branch. He remained as silent as Steph was. Stephanie studied her shot for a minute before firing her crossbow. Luckily she hit it before the bird knew it was in danger killing it instantly.
