VI    Not Alone Anymore

We were sat around a small campfire in the resistance base, waiting for some resistance person to come back with the rations. Poe was on my right, next to Finn who was next to Rey and on my left was my mum. Rey was studiously ignoring me and the rest of the resistance were either also ignoring me or staring at me. It was then that the person who had gone to the rations came back. They have so little. They were passing them around, but when they got to me I shook my head and passed them on.

"You have to eat something," Poe nudged my arm.

"No, it's not fair- I don't even help you guys." I told him. Then I had a thought.

"But-"

I got up and ran towards the exit. I turned around "I'll be back!" Everyone had confused looks on their faces. I got to my ship. Where is it? There. I ran back a loaf of bread in my hands.

"Here." I thrust the loaf at Poe. He looked at it.

"Where did you get this?"

"My ship."

"It's yours take it back."

"No. You lot need it more." He tore off a bit and passed it to Finn. Rey looked at it like she had never seen it before.

"Have you never seen bread before?"

"Only, self-making."

"That stuff? Well, real bread tastes so much better." They ate in silence for a bit. "I should probably go..."

Leia looked at me. "You have somewhere to be?"

I shrugged "I should probably go finish my job."

"You have a job?"

Rey cut in. "She's a filthy assassin, not really a job."

"Scavenging isn't either."

"No one's told you that how do you know?" Rey was suspicious.

I rolled my eyes "You're story's all across the galaxy, how would I not know?"

Leia had paled. "You're an assassin?"

"Easy money, girl's gotta get by."

It was Finn's turn to cut in. "There are better ways."

"Picture this, you're a 16 year old girl, alone, on a planet you don't know. You have basic fight skills, it's easier to get by, to stay safe if you're feared."

"But if you show compassion then everyone will like you too much to kill you." Rose decided to join the conversation.

"Maybe, but I can't go back and change it now. Besides, I need the money."

"How much do you earn?" Leia was concerned that she was at least getting enough credits.

"Whatever I damn well want. But, it's usually a few hundred credits per job."

"A few hundred!" Rose was more and more surprised by this girl.

"When people are desperate enough, eventually they'll pay anything. But, my prices are not unreasonable. See you guys around," and with that I walked back to her ship. A few minutes later the rebels would have heard a whooosh as I left their little planet.

I'm not alone anymore. I couldn't shake the feeling that someone cared about me, that they didn't want me to feel lonely. Nevertheless, I still did.
