Chapter 1: Metaphysical
Splash!
Kate jolted up. She dreamt about herself falling down from the cliff again. She was gasping and heaving very hard as if she was drowning. Kate checked her alarm clock, it says '3:07 AM' as it blinks. "Oh, great," she muttered and flopped back to bed. She reached for her cellphone on the nightstand and saw a missed call and message from her Mom. However, the message only read 'Stay safe, honey.' and her phone recieved the message at 2:15 AM. She got up and ran down stairs. Where's mom?, she thought.
"Hi, my name is Kate Vercillo. I am 15 years old and I live in a small town in Portland. I've been having weird dreams ever since I moved here. I dreamt of falling, drowning, and being chased by something or someone. But what I don't remember is, who pushed me when I fell and before I drown? Who or what was chasing me down that forest? And now, it's been two days since my mom was gone. My dad takes care of me and school is about to start. I don't know where my mom is, but it's weird that she's suddenly gone. Dad has been worried sick and I'm here, reading your last text message to me. I regret missing that call.
Where are you, mom?" Kate stopped writing on her new journal as her dad called her down for breakfast. When she passed her mom's office room, she thought she saw something move above the ceiling. She just ignored it and ran down stairs. Her dad was cooking pasta. He smiled at her and she smiled back. It was 6:00 AM in the morning and it was very cloudy outside. She picked up the newspaper and checked for 'The Word of the Day' section. Her eyes browsed through the row of letters until she found it. 'Metaphysical; of or relating to things that are thought to exist but that cannot be seen (© Merriam-Webster)' and she thought about what she saw on her mother's office ceilling. She looked up stairs and saw a shadow rush by.
