Chapter 4: Orphanage
When Kate opened the door, she was relieved to see a normal delivery guy, not the guy in her dreams.
"Oh, hey. Are you Kate Vercillo?" asked the man
"Yeah, why?" asked Kate.
"Well, three days ago, your mom left this at our post office. Figured out it might be good if I returned it to her. But I heard the news about your mom. I'm so sorry. So here, guess you can have it." he said, handing out the file. Hands aren't scared either.
"Umm, thanks. Why was my mom at the post office that time?" she asked.
"I dunno. She was supposed to send this to an orphanage near New Jersey, the address's on the back."
"Did she tell you why?" asked Kate. An orphanage? she thought.
"I dunno kid. Look, I still have to deliver these mails and some package to some people. Go figure your problems by yourself." said the delivery man, walking away.
Kate sat down on the couch in their living room and started to browse the content of the folder envelope. It was some documents from that orphanage in Newark, New Jersey. She does not understand what her mom have to do with this. She continued browsing until she found some hospital documents dated back. Kate read it:
"Dear Mrs. Newman,
We are happy to announce that, your son, Christian Newman, has been proclaimed well and alive at 4:28 PM, July 27, 1995. He is currently in the care of the hospital. Please call us immediately upon reading this message. Thank you."
Newman? she thought. And then she opened another letter:
"Dear Mrs. Newman,
By the rights of our hospital, the child has been moved to an orphanage at New Jersey. Your son was released on August 10, 1995. Please call us soon. If not, we will inform the orphanage that the child is truly an orphan. Thank you."
Her brother is alive...
Kate ran upstairs with the folder of documents in her arms. She opened here laptop and searched about the orphanage at New Jersey. There was only one orphanage at New Jersey, according to the internet. She found the name of the orphanage and quickly searched it. The result she found was devastating. She read the news article:
"New Jersey's orphanage have burned out. Witnesses have said that the fire started at 7PM. One have said that the flames consumed immediately the building. Reports included that the residencees, 34 children and 12 adults have died. The investigator said that an explosion of gas happened inside, which is to explain why the flames devoured the building fast. In further investigation, three children have ran outside just an hour before the explosion. The public and the police are still searching for the kids and would figure out if they are the cult of the explosion. (Mar 23, 2006. New Jersey)"
Kate doesn't know whether Christian is alive or not. She was too sad to know. 34 children? That's like, a whole class. She doesn't know what to do until she saw the one last box she left out. She was about to open the box when she heard the door open, then shut.
"Kate, I've bought dinner! Come down, I've bought you Starbucks too!" It was her dad. She let out a sigh of relief and went down. Afraid to ask her father about Christian Newman.
