Chapter 5: A Letter

Her dad bought KFC for dinner. He talked so much about work, probably distracting himself about mom's disappearance. Kate have never felt this sorry before. Specially because this is her dad. Her dad was always brave and talky. She helped her dad clean up dinner and bid him good night. She locked the front door before going to her room to go to bed.

Kate locked her door and turned on her lamp shade. She took the last box under her bed. It was very light, lighter than the other two, and there isn't any label around it's surface. She stripped the tape off and opened it. It was a paper. A letter. She unfolded the paper and surprised to see that the letter was for her.

"My Dear Kate,

I'm so sorry.

I have failed you.

I do not know what you are feeling now. But I know that the shadow guided you. By this time, I'm somewhere else. I want you to find me. No, don't tell your father. Please.

I have a confession.

You HAVE a brother. But he has a different father. And when I meant different, he is VERY different. I wanted you to meet him, but he passed away a month after you were born. But at least he met you.

Your brother, Christian, is very well alive. He is one of the three boys who escaped the burning orphanage. They are not the ones who burned it, bad people burned that building. You must have known about me abandoning your brother. But there is a good reason behind it. But now, I want you to find your brother. Reunite with him. He will know because you have the same mark behind your neck. If you have found him, tell him to take you to Dreamland. He knows where it is. Find me, Katie. Please, I need your help.

-Mom"

Kate was crying. Her mom knows about her own disappearance. Her brother is alive. And she has another father. The mention of her birthmark confused her. She started sobbing. She hadn't realize how much she missed her mom right now. She must have been sobbing really loud because her dad knocked the door.

"Kate? Are you okay?" her dad asked, his voice muffled by the door between them.

"Yeah, yeah, I'm good. Just... Stubbed my toe really hard. I'm fine!" Kate replied quickly.

"Oh, should I get you some ice?"

"No dad. Really. Go to sleep. I know you're tired. Good night."

"Good night." and then Kate heard his footsteps coming away. She flopped down her bed to read the letter again. What is Dreamland?, she thought, An amusement park? Kate had too much. Too much in one day. She turned off her lamp shade and tucked herself in. Before falling asleep, she noticed the shadow beside her bed, towering over her.
