'Are you still busy? Why aren't you doing something fun instead?' John asked me and tried to capture my attention, but my eyes were hooked on the words in my textbook. 'You know I have a test tomorrow.' I answered shortly without looking up.
'You could look at me while you're speaking.' John suggested and I sighed before I looked up. 'Happy now?' I said annoyed. 'No.' John answered sadly. 'It's Christmas and just listen to yourself: you've never been so grumpy before.' My eyes narrowed. 'I'm not grumpy!' I protested and regretted my shouting immediately after I saw the shock on John's face.
I apologised as my eyes found my book. 'I just want you to feel the Christmas-spirit again.' John said. 'You've been waiting for the holidays for so long, now it's finally here and you don't even notice it! Let's do something Christmas-y together.' I turned a page and continued reading. 'I can't.'
John frowned. 'You can't go out with me or you don't want to go? Is that book really better company than me? What has it that I don't have? Beauty? Charm?'
I smiled and looked up to see John's lips curled up as well. 'Knowledge.' I answered. 'I've got knowledge!' John protested. 'And I could take you in my arms when you're frustrated, can that book do that?' I shook my head. 'Well,' John continued, 'then I guess you'll better leave your paper lover for me.'
He sat down next to me and wrapped his arms around me. I captured the soft feeling of his Christmas sweater and the familiar sweet smell that came from it. 'What are you studying anyway?' John asked me. 'Biology.' I answered and glanced at the many words. 'But I'm so done with it.'
'Great,' said John, 'then we could do something you like. Anything at all as long as we do it together. Fancy a snowball fight?' He asked and I shook my head. 'I don't want to kill my beautiful charming man with snow.'
John smiled. 'Okay, then what else? Maybe we could make a snowman and call him Sherlock?' I shook my head again. 'Sherlock will burn it down... and I don't want to witness that.'
'We could go sledge-riding.'
'We've lent the sledge to Archie, remember?'
'Watch a Christmas film?'
'We can't even choose one to watch.'
John got annoyed. 'Why don't you suggest anything? You're talking down on all of my ideas.'
'If you can find something to do while I gain some biology knowledge for my test tomorrow, then I'm all in.' I said and smiled as I saw John thinking deeply. His thinking-face was simply adorable.
'I've got an idea and I know for sure that you'll like it and gain some knowledge as well, but I need to prepare it so I'll be right back...' And with that he rose and put on his thick coat and scarf. 'I'll be right back!' He repeated as he put on his gloves and left the house.
***
'I'm back!' John shouted and walked towards me, still in his coat that was covered with snow. 'I could swear there was a blizzard going on! Brr, cold.' He said and I shivered along because of the cold air he had brought inside. 'Come, put on your coat and let's go.' He said and I saw a smile appearing behind the scarf. 'Are you sure I will study as well?' I said and rose. 'Yes, completely certain. And you'll have fun as well; we won't go home until I've heard you sing a Christmas carol, do we have a deal?' I nodded as I put on my jacket, making myself ready for the imminent cold. 'Deal.'
It was colder than I had expected, but that didn't matter since I gained warmth by the sweet look on my dear John's face every time he glanced at me. Glove in glove, we walked towards I don't know where, but judging by the look on John's face that became more joyous I knew we were close to our destination.
And we reached that destination pretty quickly.
'Okay, now, don't look.' Said John softly and covered my eyes with his gloved hands. 'Now, move forward but do it slowly.' Wondering why I shouldn't walk the way I always did, I took small steps while John guided me into some unknown direction.
I heard many people cheer and so now and then a loud bang of something falling, but those sounds didn't help me discover where I was until I made the loud sound myself. 'No, not that way!' John said but I apparently had already gone too far and now, after a loud noise, lay flat-faced on a cold surface: Ice.
I opened my eyes to see more distance appearing between me and the white ground as John lifted me and put me on my feet again. 'I said "slowly", remember? You fool, how are you?' He asked. 'Fine.' I said and the huge smile on my face confirmed my answer. 'Ice skating, great idea! Let's get some skates!'
I wanted to run away, but John's stern face made me think, so I carefully walked over the ice towards the ice-skates-shop. There, John and I hired some skates and we were back on the ice in no time. 'But how will this make me study while having fun?' I asked.
John shone with pride as he showed me three speed ice skating tracks marked with an A, a B or a C. I looked questioning at the three ice paths. John explained: 'I ask a question and give you three answers, you pick the right one and skate over the answer, deal?' I smiled because of the ingenious idea. 'Yes, sure!'
And so we skated for hours. After a while, we ignored the letters on the ice and just skated together, ending our amazing day with hot chocolate and cookies. The cold tickled my nose and the pain of my earlier fall ( one of many ) had disappeared because of my frozen limbs.
As close to John as I could be, I walked home, John and me both trying to gain some warmth in the cold winter night. The decorations of the city were beautiful and the lights mirrored in John's eyes. And, together with that sweet smile, his face had turned into a breathtaking picture. I smiled back and tightened my grip on my precious soldier. There we stood for a while, frozen both in time and because of the weather, brightly smiling at each other, thinking the exact same thing. Yes, this certainly had been a night to remember.
