~Emma's POV~
"Do I look okay?" I asked Kaitlyn.
"You look fine," she smiled. "Ready for this?"
I nodded and straightened my cut-off shirt, "Yeah, we need this."
"Maybe we can finally prove we aren't some bubblegum pop group," Emily muttered. "It pisses me off."
"She's here!" CeCe yelled.
The girls and I walked out of the dressing room of the Enmore Theatre. Towards the middle of the theatre, an interviewer from Alternative Press magazine was sitting. There was also a young man-no older than 18-with a camera. She welcomed us warmly and we each hugged her. Her name was Shelby; the camera man's was TJ.
"So, this will be a pretty laid-back interview," Shelby informed us. "A few questions about the EP. A few about song-writing and producing. Then, some funny and fan questions. Sound good?"
We all nodded and smiled, sitting on the red seats. I sat next to Emily who was next to Shelby; Kaitlyn and CeCe were in the row behind us. Once TJ had the camera stabilized on his stand, we began the interview.
"Okay, so you just released your self-titled EP on November 12. Can you tell us about the reaction you've received so far?"
"Well," CeCe started, "our fans have given us a lot of positive feedback, but we've received mixed reviews from people who don't even know what they're talking about."
"What exactly do you mean?"
"Like, people who haven't even listened to the EP are bashing us," Emily talked a bit loudly and quickly. "They are saying that it's like everything you hear on the radio, but it obviously is not. People need to understand that we aren't like a K-Pop, bubblegum girl group. Yeah, we toured with a boyband, but they gave us a chance. I just, people should know what they're talking about when they speak."
"On that note, can you maybe tell us the influences on your music?"
"We all have our own little bands we incorporate into the style," Kaitlyn began, "but bigs ones for is are: All Time Low, Blink-182, Mayday Parade, Fall Out Boy, and Simple Plan."
"Can you go through the track list of the EP and give a short explanation of each meaning?"
"Emma," Emily asked, "you wanna do it? I mean you wrote most of it."
I nodded, "The first track is Best Thing. Uhm, I wrote this track in early April after there were some mixed signals I had with someone. The meaning behind it is pretty obvious. Some guy made a dick move and then he lost the girl.
Rumor Mill is mainly directed towards people back at home. CeCe and I wrote this together. It's to the people who thought they knew us.
Breakdown is just a little tune we wrote. The message behind it isn't as personal as the other tracks. It's kind of like a girl power song. It starts out and this girl depends on talking to her ex-boyfriend. As the song progresses, she realizes she doesn't need him.
The next track is just a cover of What's My Age Again by Blink-182. This just started one day at soundcheck and we decided to record it.
I've Given Up On You is probably my favorite track on the EP. Uh, this track was actually not going to be on the EP because it was written after we had the whole thing tracked. I ended up finishing the actual writing in a day. I wrote the song while I was in a relationship that was hurting him. I couldn't give him what he deserved, so I let him go. The song wasn't just me giving up on him and our relationship. I gave up on myself too.
Therapy is the one track that people have previously heard. I wrote this song in early February before we started touring. We decided to put it on the EP because of the crowd response we got when performing it. It seems to be the favorite of most of the fans. We've always done it where I just play acoustically and sing. This time I used an electric guitar and we added in each instrument. It's just an amped up version."
Shelby smiled at us, "I've listened to it a couple times. It's one of the best EP's I've heard in awhile. Okay, so you're currently on tour called 'Best Thing That's Ever Happened.' It was about a week and a half and consisted of about 10 tour dates. You're on the third and final date of the last destination in Sydney. How does it feel knowing you sold out all of the shows?"
"It's shocking," Kaitlyn smiled in awe. "We had to add on dates at places because of the demand."
"So, Warped Tour in about a week. How excited are you?"
"We all grew up going to concerts and music festivals. It's just a dream come true. My first ever concert was Motion City Soundtrack at Warped Tour. The best part is that we will hopefully prove that we aren't some bubblegum pop band," CeCe replied.
"Okay, now some fan questions."
As the interview continued many hilarious questions were asked. I knew that one would be asked about Michael and I. I didn't think that laming about him would hurt so much.
"Honestly, there was a lot of people who did not like us together. They decided to voice their opinion. It eventually got to the point where I was seriously questioning if I should just go into my bedroom and never come out. I wanted to disappear.
After awhile, I realized that I had only become worse. I didn't realize it, but Michael was okay. He didn't the kind of support I needed. He was the one doing all the work in the relationship. One day I woke up and realized that he was happy now. I wasn't happy. That was the problem," I ended in a whisper.
The interview ended and we all headed backstage. People began to flood into the theatre. Everyone warmed up silently backstage, but I couldn't focus. All I could think about was the boys. Were they in the crowd?
We boarded the stage as the entire theatre erupted with screams. We ran through a few songs until I was left alone on the stage with my electric guitar. I stood at my microphone, staring into the crowd.
"This song is called 'I've Given Up On You'," I smiled.
"You used to make me feel like I could walk on water/ now most night I'm just sinking down/ and down/ you're the reason why I can't/ listen to those same songs/ I used to/ I wrote songs about you all the time/ I bet I don't run through your mind," I stepped away from the mic as the crowd was chanting.
"I've given up on you/ but it still hurts to know you're not alone/ don't worry/ I'll keep out of your life/ and stay awake at night."
My eyes scanned the crowd and stopped on the four boys in the front row. They were here. After everything that has happened, they were here-front and center. Michael was holding a sign.
"I've given up on you/ but it still hurts to know you're not alone/ don't worry/ I'll keep out of our life/ and stay awake at night/ with my just my skin and bones/ it hurts to know you're not alone/ but I've given up on you/ and my skin/ and my bones."
It said 'I haven't given up on you.'
