"Ammi, aainda aisa nahi karun ghi, please," Aaina pleaded, tears streaming down her face as she cowered on the sofa, trying to shield herself from the impending beating. Sila towered over her, slipper in hand, ready to strike.
"Zuban chalati ho aage se," Sila scolded, landing a sharp slap with the slipper.
"Main zuban nahi chala rahi," Aaina sobbed, her voice trembling. "Iqra bhi to gai ti or mere baad wapis aayi hai use kuch kiun nhi kehti," she desperately tried to deflect the attention.
Iqra, sensing the danger, quickly interjected, "Baat suno, mujhe is main lany ki zaroorat nahi hai."
With a frustrated sigh, Sila threw the slipper to the floor and slipped it back on. "Bahot choot dey rakhi hai tum logon ko maine, waqat se pehle sudar jao warna agar maine sudarna shuru kar diya to phir na kehna," she warned, pulling on her jacket and preparing to leave for work, muttering under her breath.
"Is ki umar ki thi na main to ek bachi ki maa thi main," Sila pointed at Iqra, her frustration evident.
"Han to main kya shadi ke bina bache kar lun?" Iqra blurted out without thinking, her words hanging in the charged atmosphere.
"Beghairat, besharam, behaya," Sila snapped, marching toward her. "Ek ulte haath ki dun ghi to sari aqal thikany aa jae ghi," she threatened, raising her hand but stopping just before striking her.
Aaina, recognising the gravity of the situation, immediately fell silent, pressing her lips together and making herself as small as possible.
Sila, with one last searing look at both of them, issued her final command before leaving. "Ghar chamaka huva hona chahiye jab tak main wapas aoon."
As Sila walked out the door, Aaina whispered to Iqra, "Sachi main, ek din yeh chappal hamari family ka coat of arms ban jayega."
Iqra chuckled, "Aur us par likha hoga, 'Unity through slippers'."
Just then, Shafaq descended the stairs, still groggy from sleep and rubbing her eyes. She suddenly slipped on a discarded tissue, jolting her awake. After recovering from her momentary panic, she took in the chaotic scene in the living room, filled with crumpled tissues.
