Eventually, she reached the ornate entrance of the mansion. The guard enquired, and she swiftly handed him the pass given by the previous gatekeeper.
At first, R didn't inspect it closely, but when he did, recognition sparked in his eyes. Hoping she wouldn't notice, he made a concerted effort to avoid direct eye contact.
"You'll need to report to the head of the team for the domestic staff. Head to the Domestic Staff Accommodations, and you'll find her office on the right, just next to the entrance," one of the guards helpfully directed, indicating the direction of a nearby building.
"Thank you," Shafaq acknowledged with a nod, exchanging a fleeting and somewhat curious glance with R before setting off toward her destination, her heart pulsating with both trepidation and exhilaration.
Upon arriving at the office, she encountered the delightful Rose Joseph, a woman of 58 whose melanin-rich complexion exuded a natural luminosity.
After Shafaq introduced herself, Rose kindly gesture for her to take a seat.
"I've been expecting you," Rose announced with a warm smile.
Rising from her chair, she opened a cupboard and retrieved a sleek black box, placing it before Shafaq.
"This is your uniform. We were informed that you cover your hair, so we've arranged a few headpieces to complement it. However, you are welcome to use your own head scarves, provided they are in black or grey and securely fastened with no loose ends."
Rose paused, took a breath and continued: "Shifts will always be 10 to 12 hours, alternating between day and night. You will be granted five 10-minute rest breaks, can be taken as you see fit but they cannot be taken together as for example a 50 minutes break. You will also get two 30-minute breaks during your 10-hour shift. But if you work 12 hours, then you will have two 45 minute breaks together with the five 10 minute breaks."
"Meals will be provided at the staff canteen. I understand different faiths have specific dietary requirements, so please inform the canteen, and mention any allergies you may have.
"Breakfast, Lunch and dinner need to be taken at the designated time, with staff rotating.
For example those returning from the night shift will eat breakfast first, allowing them to rest immediately. Afterwards, those starting their morning shift can eat.
"Maintaining proper posture during your shift is essential—back straight, head straight, but gaze low."
"While each Smith family member has someone assigned to them for specific needs, they can still call on you for assistance." Rose was really soft spoken, even when she explained these rules she radiated motherly energy.
