"Why do you punish me, then try to fix what you've broken?"

"¡Hola, Anuu!" Max called out as he spotted Aaina at her locker, Adil standing beside her.
She looked up, "Hi, Max!" she greeted warmly, the warmth in her voice catching him off guard for a moment.
He smiled, encouraged by her good mood. "So, when's your volleyball competition?"
"It's during school break," she explained, glancing at Adil. "We'll be gone for five days."
Max raised an eyebrow, surprised. "So, you won't be home for the holidays?"
"Thankfully!" Her eyes sparkled. "For the first time, I won't be stuck at home or picking up extra shifts during holidays. It's going to be so nice to do something different."
Max grinned. "Well, in that case, I'll come watch the game."."
She smirked, folding her arms as she leaned back against the locker. "Yeah, right. Like your mum's really going to let you travel all the way to Washington," she teased, her tone half-challenging, half-doubtful.
Max's grin widened, undeterred. "Challenge accepted."
"Then you'd better greet me properly before the game."
"Deal," he replied, his smile matching hers.
"Oh, hi Adil." He finally turned his attention to Adil, as if he'd only just noticed him standing there.
Adil responded with a slightly awkward smile. He was everything Max wasn't—composed, easy-going, and always kind. Not to mention, he had a terrific sense of humour and he never irritated Aaina the way Max did.
Max reached out, lightly twirling a strand of Aaina's hair between his fingers. "Anuu, your hair's grown so much in just a few months."
She jerked her head back instantly. "If you touch me one more time, I'll chop off your hands," she warned, her tone sharp.
Max smirked, completely unfazed. "Hmm? What was that? Sorry, I wasn't listening." He twirled the strand one last time before letting go
She crossed her arms, exasperated. "One day, you're gonna regret underestimating me."
Max smirked, stepping closer with an amused look in his eyes. "Is that a threat or a promise?"
"It's a warning," she shot back, her tone firm.
Adil, trying to ease the situation, chimed in with a gentle smile. "Max, she said she doesn't like it. So please respect that."
Max's smile didn't falter, but there was a subtle shift in his tone—something sharper beneath the surface. "Don't worry, Adil. Aaina and I have known each other for years. We've been through this kind of stuff a million times." His tone was light, but the words had an edge, the way you can feel a sting even when the touch is soft. "It's just how we are."
