The question on my mind was always: what will I do after the senior year?
Thankfully Dante had answered that question for me and I didn't have to think too much of it.
"We'll go somewhere far from El Paso, we can start a fresh new life. Just us, just two Vatos living the Mexican American life."
I lost it when he said 'vato', I never heard him use any length of slang that I had used when I had met him a couple years back. He also laughed too, his laugh was sweet, taunting, and warm against my heart.
Is this how mom felt when he fell in love with dad?
Is this how love feels for a very long time?
I'm not denying I don't love him, I adore him more than anything. After everything we been through, I love Dante Quintana I'll never stop loving no matter what.
"What are you thinking about that you look so pensive?"
When I looked up to see Dante finishing up his art on the huge (once) blank canvas, now covered in paint mixtures and textures turning the white into an image of exploding color. His face so pensive when painting on them I found it pleasing and beautiful.
"What are you painting this time?" I said chasing the prompt of his question, meanwhile he was thinking of various ways to explain it to me. I examined the canvas splattered in various paints and textures. From my point of view, the paints of blue, lavender, violet-black, swirled around the canvas blending with one another.
"Since you liked looking at the stars I decided to paint you the galaxy." Dante said smiling at me.
"Do you like it?" He gave me this pout that I had turned my smile into a wide grin. "I love it."
Then I kissed him, he kissed me back. I wasn't ashamed of loving Dante no longer, I enjoyed his company and kisses. The rides to the dessert and looking at the stars were far more pleasing than ever. It wasn't until we broke our kiss when Dante's mom entered in. She had given birth to Dante's little sister only a few months ago, Dante was so upset that it was a girl but when he got a hold of his little sister in his arms his heart warmed.
Mrs. Quintana stopped at the door, "I should come back later, it seems your busy."
Dante and I broke our kiss, he got up and said, "no it's fine come inside mom."
Mrs. Quintana took no hesitation on walking in on our moment, the baby curled in her arms was asleep.
Esperanza Quintana
Is what Dante told me her name was, it was perfect for a sweet newborn. Dante had various ideas on naming her sister but Sam had turned him down. Although, they chosen one of Dante's names for her middle name, he still had the pleasure of loving his little sister.
"Dante you really need to clean up this studio, your father and I have given this empty room to continue with your art not to make in a hell house."
Dante narrowed his eyes and extended his arms to get a hold of her baby sister. "Mom get some rest, you seemed tired."
"Dante don't change the subject."
I walked between them and Dante's mother and she handed me the sweet baby girl.
"Thank you Ari."
"No problem."
Dante gave me a glare and I smiled back at him.
"Thanks for helping me Ari."
"Your very welcome."
"You'll pay for it later."
"I'm sure I will."
"Im deadly serious."
"Sure you are."
"I'am."
"Of course you are."
Mrs. Quintana turned her attention to us, "Dante please clean up your art studio. I don't want another mess just like your room."
"Fine." Dante said.
"Good." Mrs. Quintana kissed his son on his cheek and exited out the room leaving us the baby.
"Don't get to comfy being with her, your gonna help me sooner or later."
"Sooner or later your gonna have your little sis with splattered paint all over her."
Dante grinned, "I intend on teaching the arts of poetry and art, of course I'm gonna teach her the basics in art."
"No doubt you are."
"Don't be a wiseass Ari."
"Don't smartass me Dante." I mocked him.
"How lovely you called me."
"It wasn't my intention."
"It wasn't mine either."
He burst out laughing and I did the same, our laughed echoed in the small art studio. Esperanza slept during our laughter I'm very surprised that she hadn't woken up from our laugh.
Apparently Dante had told me she was a smooth sleeper she hadn't woken up late at night like he did; as told by his mother.
I wonder what would Esperanzas life would be, would it be different than us or would she faced some hard undeveloped choices. I only hope Esperanza's life goes smooth and that she'll have to unlock every locked secret of the universe.
Just like Dante opened mine.
