Chapter 7: Minefield

"Hey!"

Matilda said, emerging from the room.

"I found a hat!"

She put on the fur hat and posed for her friends.

"That's an ushanka." Tori said.

"A what?"

"It's a fur hat with wind guards."

"It looks stylish!"

Tori looked closer at the hat.

"It has a badge on it..."

She took it off of Matilda's head, to her dismay.

"Well, look at this." Tori said. Ell peeked from the kitchen, looking tipsy. She dropped the plastic bottle, but didn't really take notice.

"It's a Red Army badge."

"So it's a military hat?" Matilda asked.

"Yep. Soviet military."

"Ooh."

Matilda grabbed the hat again and adjusted it on her head.

"I'm keeping this."

Tori looked over at Ell, who just shrugged.

"Ok then." Tori said. "All yours."

Matilda squealed with delight as she ran to the door.

"Let's go already!"

Tori and Ell walked out with Matilda.

"See that fence over there?" Tori said to the group, pointing towards a glint of metal in the distance. "I want to climb over that and see what lurks inside."

"We'll help you out, then." Matilda said.

Ell just nodded as she started walking towards the fence, tripping every so often. Tori and Matilda ran over to help their friend.

"So, how was the Kvass?"

"Great!" Ell said, giggling uncontrollably.

Tori rolled her eyes as the three continued towards the fence.

"So, Matilda..." Ell said, still giggling. "Knock knock."

"Who's there?"

"Interrupting cat."

"Interrupt cat wh-"

Ell meowed and immediately busted out laughing. Matilda and Tori laughed along with her as they got ever so closer to the fence.

"If we get to the fence..." Ell said, taking a break from laughing. "There's SNOW way I'm having you stand on my shoulders."

"ICE SNOWing that, Ell." Matilda said.

Ell immediately bursted into a fit of giggles as they finally arrived at the fence. Ell began to climb it before Tori stopped her.

"Who knows what's inside, Ell." Tori said.

Ell reluctantly climbed back down. Tori shuffled through the snow until she found a rock. She threw it in. Suddenly, the ground exploded, sending dirt flying towards the three. Everybody ducked in fear. As soon as all the dirt fell, Tori looked up and immediately muttered two word.

"Land mines..."

The three stood up again.

"Well, I guess I owe you one, Tori." Ell said, shaken but unharmed.

"Like I said, you never know what's inside, so test before trying."

The three just looked on.

"So, now we know people definitely don't want us in there..." Ell said, immediately sobering up.
