MARTY R.—
dallas and i pulled away lazily. i quickly attempted to wipe the smudged lipstick off of his lips.
"damnit." he laughed, noticing the red lips i sported had worn off a bit.
he pulled me along to the door, there stood ponyboy and johnny. i was confused, but the sight of the younger boys took away some of the affect of the booze.
"johnny killed a soc, dal!" ponyboy cried, i felt a lot less drunk after that statement.
"good for you, get in here." dallas pulled the two boys into the bar.
i walked behind the two, attempting to shield them slightly from the sights of couples doing some very dirty things. a girl looked at ponyboy, a small grin fell on her lips. it was quickly wiped away when her eyes fell onto my glare.
the four of us walked upstairs as quick as possible. ponyboy and johnny sat on a bed while i stood against the wall. i figured this is where dallas stayed.
"take that off man, you're gonna freeze to death." dally orders ponyboy, tossing him a best up towel.
ponyboy quickly pulled the wet shirt off of his body, shivering as he wrapped himself in a towel.
dallas pulled out a shiny gun, loading it before handing it to johnny. "dammit johnny, don't point that shit at me," he snapped at the scared boy, "you're gonna hop onto a train goin' to windrixville, from there you're gonna stay in the church on jay mountain. you two will not even poke your heads outta it, got it?"
both boys shook their heads quickly. dally's eyes dropped onto me, "are you sobered up?"
"uh dal, you got a little.. lipstick under you lip." ponyboy's voice was mixed with his teeth chattering as he slid on a flannel dal tossed him.
i gave dally a small smirk as he quickly wiped it off. he glared at me before handing johnny a wad of cash.
"we'll be out there as soon as everything dies down." dal informs the two as we walk out to my truck.
ponyboy and johnny climbed into the truck, before i could get in dallas' hand grabbed onto my wrist.
"i'm gonna walk to your place, if i'm not there when you are the fuzz are gonna call me into questioning. the tracks goin' to windrixville are right past 67th and down to the very edge of town," he explained, "just make sure they get there alright." dallas looked drained, an exasperated tone had took over his voice.
"i will, dal." i promise before pulling out of his grasp.
johnny day next to me, dallas tossed his leather jack in at pony. i watched as the pale greaser ran back into buck's.
i speed off down the road, johnny shaking beside me.
"so, you and dal a thing now?" ponyboy broke the silence.
"far from it." i muttered, speeding slightly.
i arrived at the tracks. my fingers drumming against the steering wheel. we all got out, i handed them an extra twenty dollars.
"be careful guys." i placed my hand on ponyboy's shoulder.
"hey, make sure soda is okay while i'm gone. he's not in such a good place right now, i know you two are pretty close." ponyboy chewed on his bottom lip.
i didn't care if i barely knew the kid, his heart and the alcohol in my system forced me to pull him in a hug. i couldn't help it, i squeezed him slightly before we pulled away. i patted johnny's shoulder lightly, giving him a small smile. i could tell johnny was the skittish one of the gang, i wasn't gonna force him to hug me.
my truck took off, i watched the two young boys disappear towards the side of the train in my rear view mirror. a pang went through my heart, they're just kids.
finally, i arrived home around four a.m. i was tired, beaten down, sad. my feet sluggishly carried me through the door. my heart stopped for a second when i saw dallas sitting on the couch, barely visible. the only source of light was a lamp.
"jesus, dal." i breathed, catching my breath.
"i never thought i'd be caught up in a murder wrap in tulsa, that's somethin' that only happened in new york." he spoke.
"i didn't think crime was that bad up here, i had maybe two run ins with the cops. i was only a witness to the cases though." i plopped down beside him.
"i've been in and out jail, small shit like robbery. johnny's innocent though, he was protectin' and he's been through too much shit."
my head fell against dally's shoulder, i listened intently to his stories. some about johnny's past- which were vague for a reason. most about new york rendezvous and the trouble he caused. i voiced some of my own stories, to which he also listened to intently.
neither of us could sleep, with what had happened it was basically impossible. the sun had just began to rise when i got up to change and wash my disgusting left over make up off.
i changed into a clean, comfier pair of shorts with a thin plain black tank top. my face clear of makeup and my hair in a high ponytail. slowly, i made my way back to the living room. dallas was curled up on the couch. he almost looked innocent, i laughed at that thought. lack of sleep and beginning hangover must be starting to get to me. his boots were kicked to the side, a shiver fell over him.
a soft blanket i had thrown on the back of couch now rested over his body, winston best thank me when he wakes up. my body was wrapped in my comforter. i collapsed in the loveseat, sleep finally taking over me.
i knew johnny was innocent, his big black doe eyes were caught in headlights. you can't blame a kid for trying to look out for his best friend.
