A Hard Life: Ch. 20

Visiting day came too quickly for me. Jasmin and Natalie had to shake me awake, I absolutely did not want to leave this room. They made me get up anyways. I showered and put on some light makeup. I wore a dark blue tank top that showed my scars and black jean shorts.

"Come on let's go Kenzie!" Natalie shouted at me. I sighed, and left the dorm. There weren't as many parents as I thought, but a good amount.

I looked among them and saw a face, I thought I'd never see again. Mom.

She gave me a sad smile and I ran up to her and hugged her. "I missed you so much!"

"I missed you too sweety. But right now, I need to tell you something important, alone," she gives me a troubled expression. My mother leads me towards the Chasm.

"What is it mom? What's wrong?"

"You are in grave danger."

"What do you mean?"

She looks straight into my eyes and answers, "I mean, that Jeanine knows what you are."

I stand there. Confused and scared. Ot can't be, how could she possibly know?! Does that mean she knows if others are Divergent?

As if reading my mind, my mother says solemnly, "She knows you and your friends, Kane, Natalie, and Elizabeth, are Divergent."

Kane is Divergent? I assumed he was because he posses multiple traits for the other Factions.

"W-What do I do?"

"Warm your friends. You must hide. If you guys can get to the Amity Headquarters, I and others will be there to help you." My mother gently squeezes my shoulder, "You must be careful of who you trust, and when you do things. They are always watching."

"What about Meredith?"

"After she spoke with you yesterday," she has tears in her eyes, "she now helps Jeanine back in Erudite."

No. No, no, no! I feel like my whole world is crashing down.

"I must go." She hugs me tightly, and I do the same. "Stay safe."

"Don't worry about me. You're the one who needs to be careful."

My mom let's go after a few moments and hurries away.

"I've got to find Kane," I mumble to myself. I run around till I finally see him amongst the crowd. "Kane!" He turns around as I sprint up to him. "Kane, I need to talk to you. Could we go to your apartment?"

I probably sounded like an idiot but he nodded and said, "Sure come on." He grabbed my hand and led me up to his large apartment. "What's wrong?"

"She knows..."

"Who?"

"Jeanine! She knows about what I am! I also know that you're Divergent, and she's looking for us," I gasp for a breath.

"How did she find out?!" Kane asked giving me a worried yet serious look.

"I don't know. My mother said she's always watching. And that my sister," I can't hold back my tears anymore, "she's working for Jeanine!"

Kane wraps his arms around me. "It's ok... What else did she tell you?"

"Well, do you know that Elizabeth and Natalie a-are..."

"Divergent? Yeah, I know."

"My mom said we should leave as soon as possible, and get to Amity HQ," I inform him.

"Warn your friends. We should leave tonight. Meet me up at the fear landscape room," Kane directs me.

"Ok then..."

He kisses my forehead, "Don't worry, you're gonna be ok." Suddenly something clicks inside of me, and it's not me I'm worried about. It's Kane.

I feel this new emotion I never thought I would experience. I like Kane. No... I love him, and everything about him. I love his kindness, his strength, and how he cares about me for who I am.

I let a smile form on my lips and I move back a little so I can look into his eyes.

"What're you thinking about?" he asks smiling down at me.

I never though I could be happy in a dangerous moment. "I'm thinking about how much I care about you."

"You know, I think I might love you. From the first minute I saw you, I knew there was something special about you."

I kiss him lightly then say, "Same here."
