A Hard Life: Ch. 28

"I can't believe it! We're members!" Natalie shouts. Elizabeth and her have been shouting that ever since I left my apartment. Which was like, 2 hours ago.

Natalie and Elizabeth are roommates and their place is just down the hall. Jasmin's apartment is next to mine, as well as Kane's. I'm glad I have people I trust close to me.

"Yes, we know! You can stop saying it now!" Jasmin laughs at my complaining. "Besides, since we're members, you guys need jobs."

Elizabeth points out, "What about you?"

"I already have a job, obviously," I flip my hair like a sassy girl making them laugh.

"Me too!" Jasmin squeals. Her and I are trainers for the Dauntless born and Divergents. Kane and Konrad are going to be helping with the refugees, there seems to be more of them than the amount I have to work with.

Elizabeth makes a suggestion, "Maybe we could work at the tattoo parlor!"

"Yeah! Let's go!" Natalie drags Elizabeth in that direction to apply for the job.

"Ok then."

"I guess they found their job."

"Are you sure it's ok to let them handle a needle?" Jasmin jokingly asks.

I laugh and answer, "I hope it's ok!"

After awhile, the two finally show up. "WE GOT THE JOB!"

"Alright, alright! We're right here, you don't gotta shout!" Jasmin and I scold.

"Sorry."

After a tiring day, us four meet up with Kane and Konrad in The Pit. I walk up to Kane and wrap my arms around his neck while he wraps his around my waist.

"Oooooohhhhhh," I hear the girls chant. Kane chuckles when I stick my tongue out at them.

Elizabeth snickers, "How professional Kenzie."

"Whatever." Natalie walks over to Konrad, those two like each other, it's pretty obvious.

"So, I got to know your brother today," Kane tells me.

I laugh nervously. "What happened?"

"He didn't seem too fond of me at first, but he warmed up to the idea. We talked, he's kinda cool for an Erudite teacher."

"Who's 20?"

"Yeah." Then Luke walks up to us.

"Hi Kenzie, hey Kane."

"Hello."

"May I talk to Kane?" he questions.

"Sure." They walk off.

"What do you think they're talking about?" Jasmin asks me.

"I don't know." Then my mind starts running away from my and I get lost in my thoughts.

"Kenzie!" fingers snap in front of my face and my assumptions stop. Kane looks down at me. "You ok?"

"Yeah, I was just thinking." I didn't realize I had say down so I stand up. Then I notice everyone else left. "Where'd the others go?"

"While you were in a daze, they got tired so they said goodnight and went back to their places."

"Oh. What did my brother want?" I question.

His face became serious. "Remember this morning when I said that it seems like this is going to be a war?" I nod. "Your sister sent word to Luke that Jeanine is planning something."

So Meredith is on our side. "Meredith is helping us?" I ask hopeful, I need confirmation.

"Looks like it." I smile and hug him, I know that this may be a war but we all still deserve a little bit of happiness from time to time.

Kane walks me back to my apartment, hand in hand. "I love you..." I had never said those words before, I liked it.

"I'm sorry, I couldn't hear you. Could you repeat that?" Kane smirks.

I giggle and do so. "I love you."

"I love you too," then we kiss.
