A Hard Life: Ch. 21

After I spent some time with Kane, I went to go find my friends to tell then the plan. Luckily, I found Jasmin, Natalie, and Elizabeth strangely in our dorm alone.

"Guys, I need to tell you something."

"What is Kenzie?" Elizabeth asked standing up from her spot on the floor.

"We need to run, tonight."

"What why?"

Ok, I need to work on my explanations don't I? "Jeanine knows. She knows that we're Divergent. My mom told me today that we need to leave and get to Amity HQ. Kane is going to help us, he has to come too."

"Two questions. My first is why, why do we need to bring Kane?" Natalie asks giving me the same look she did when me and him walked into the cafeteria.

I felt some heat rise to my cheeks. "He is coming because he is also Divergent. What's your second question?"

I'm guessing they were all hoping Kane was coming because I liked him, because they're faces fell slightly with disappointment. Don't get me wrong though, he is also coming because I love him.

"Second Question, can we bring others?"

"Why, do we need to?"

"Well, we should bring Jasmin. And then there's someone else I want to bring."

"Who?" we all ask Natalie at the same time.

"Konrad..." she says quietly but we can still hear it. I knew Konrad, I had run into him a couple times and had to tutor him. Natalie and him came from the same faction so I'm sure they knew each other. He was a trustworthy kid. Besides, he wasn't in Candor anymore, he didn't have to tell the truth.

"Ok. He can come."

"Really?" Natalie jumped happily and hugged me tightly. "Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!" She finally let go and ran out to go find him.

"Elizabeth, we'll meet you in The Pit, then we're gonna go find Kane," I instructed.

"Yes ma'am. See you guys tonight!" She left to go get ready. Jasmin and I did the same.

"Alright, he's coming," Natalie said beaming.

"Ok, now help us get ready," Jasmin commanded. We had to make it look like we were still there in the morning.

When everyone returned from dinner, we went to sleep. Actually, everyone did except for me, Jasmin, Natalie, and Konrad. We were getting out of here tonight.

"There you guys are," Elizabeth whispered as we snuck out of our dorm. "Come on let's go find Kane."

"Kenzie should lead. She knows where Kane is," Konrad says. He may not be as dumb as everyone says he is, because I could tell that Elizabeth was thinking we'd have to split up and search.

I lead them up the stairs to the fear landscape and find Kane leaning against the wall with some guns laying at his feet.

I run over to him, "Hey." I give a light smile that he returns.

"Hey, get enough sleep?"

"We didn't sleep at all," Jasmin answered coming up behind me. Scared me to death.

"Are we going to use those guns?" Elizabeth asked. I could see enthusiasm in Natalie's eyes.

"We're taking them hopefully we won't have to use them. You're lucky I brought an extra gun for that guy," Kane pointed to Konrad.

"Yeah, thanks," Konrad said picking one up.

Kane then led us through the landscape room, then we were outside. The night sky was dotted with stars. It feels like it's been forever since I've seen sky. Though, it really hasn't been that long.

"Get ready to jump." We see the train coming and we start running. When an open car comes beside us, we jump in. Jasmin and Elizabeth sit at the doorway, and Konrad and Natalie sit against the wall towards the front. Kane and I sit at the wall opposite of them.

"Try to get some sleep. I'll wake you up when we get there," Kane whispered to me.

"But I'm not-" I yawn, "Ok, maybe I'm a little bit tired."

He chuckles and says, "See? Now go to sleep." I rest my head on his shoulder and he wraps his arm around me. I smile as I fall to sleep.
