“I got it!” I shrieked with excitement, throwing myself into Alice’s unsuspecting arms, not even waiting for her to have opened the door fully.

“Okay, you’ve lost me already. What exactly do you have?” Alice replied a little breathlessly while I was wrapping her in a bone-crushing hug.

“A job! I have a job!”

“Whoa whoa whoa, let’s back up a bit here. Since when? And how?” she inquired as she slowly pried my arms from around her neck.

“After school on Friday I was with Matt, and then we went bungee jumping, well, not really, but sort of, and he said that it would be great if –” I was cut off mid sentence by Alice’s hand covering my mouth making the rest of what I was saying unintelligible.

“Violet, shut up for a second. Please. You’re speaking so fast that I don't think I would be able to understand you even if I didn't have my hand over your mouth.” Alice cut in snickering about how ridiculous I probably sound right now. Deep breaths, I reminded myself. “Come on, let’s at least get you stuff up to my room before you launch into what I’m sure is going to be fantastic story about how exactly you scored yourself. I don't even have a job and I’ve lived in this town from my whole life...” she finished, muttering the last bit in a joking manner.

Matt had just dropped me to Alice’s house after my induction at AJ Hackett bungee. He insisted that he be the one to pick me up from there this afternoon so that he was the first one to know if I got the job or not. Typical Matt, he was the sweetest guy. He’s been giving me lifts everywhere. Even though he said it didn’t bother him, I still felt bad that I hadn’t at least payed him for it. But hey, now that had a job maybe I could afford to.

I was so incredibly excited that I had gotten the job. Just thinking about it makes my stomach tighten with excitement. Even though it was only for a month while another staff member was away, it was a start at least. When I got there this morning they showed me around the place, where everything was behind the front counter, and behind the bar. It also became apparent to me that they have barbeques at lunchtime on weekends where the public can also grab a bite to eat.

I ventured up the 162 stairs of the bungee tower so that I could see what goes into hooking someone up to a bungee cord and walking them to the edge. I met two of the boys that work up there with the bungee jumpers and also the guy that does the filming of the jump. They were all very welcoming and asked if I would be taking the leap of faith today. When I informed them that that wasn’t going to be happening today they jokingly called me a sook and still tried talking me into it, but I didn't back down. It might look high from the ground, but I can tell you it looked twice as high as that from the top. Every time that I got close to the edge my heart began to race uncontrollably.

It was at the end of the day that Monique, one of the girls that work there, gladly told me that she would love it if I would join the team there. Trying not to sound too excited, I accepted straight away, and she laughed at how high my voice went. I tried on one of the work shirts for sizing as Monique jotted down some of my details and told me that I could start next weekend Saturday, and then every Saturday from there until the other girl returned. Just as I was about to leave she also mentioned that I could have my free bungee on my next shift as well if I’d like, which I told her I would think about. It’s easy enough to say that you’ll do something before you actually have to do it, so I wasn’t guaranteeing anything just yet.
