I spent the following week avoiding Will at all costs, focusing on getting to know Matt better after the night at the beach. It’s not that I was scared of what Will had to say, if he even had anything to say, I was just still angry with him. I knew that if he had come up to me it probably would have ended in another war of words, at the least, and I was trying to steer clear of all possible causes of drama right now. Noah was yet to make another reappearance, which I was beyond thankful for. Hopefully he had realised that I want nothing to do with him and has finally gone back home… hopefully.
Matt had begun making a habit out of walking me to my classes, even though I know where they all are now. Occasionally he would slip his hand into mine or throw his arm around my shoulders on the way, and would give me the most heart-warming smile when I made no moves to pull away. He had told me about how his family had inherited most of their money, and that his parents are both layers. He has one little brother, Alex, who is only seven. It’s easy to see how much Matt loves him by the way he talks about him; honestly, it melts my heart.
I snap back into reality from my little reminiscing moment when Hayley begins snapping he fingers in front of my eyes. “Sorry, did I miss something?” I ask in an embarrassed voice, after spacing out on whatever conversation they were having.
“God girl, you space out way to often. Maybe you should get that checked?” Hayley replies in a humoured tone of voice.
“Yeah I’ll look into it,” I retort in an equally sarcastic voice.
“Getting back on track here, Violet what is has been happening with you and Matt lately?” Serena asks, giving me a sly wink.
“I don’t know, we’ve just been hanging out a bit I guess.”
“A bit? Look, when you start ditching lunch with us to hang out with your lover boy then we know there is something else going on there,” Alice says as she steps into the conversation. I have to admit, she has me there.
“Okay, that was only twice and isn’t anything to freak out about! I’m just sort of flowing with whatever it is; I don’t want to assume anything yet. I don’t think you realise that I’ve only really known him for three weeks,” I reply, only really realising this myself. It feels like I’ve been here for way longer already.
“So you do like him then,” Alice replies quickly, leaning forward and raising her eyebrows at me. I instantly feel a blush flourishing and spreading across my cheeks before feeling the familiar comfort of an arm being slug around my shoulders as Matt slides into the space next to me at the table.
“What are you guys gossiping about? Looks juicy,” Matt comments, looking around the table. I feel incredibly relived that he hadn’t arrived just a few seconds earlier and overheard what we were talking about.
Alice gives me a sly look indicating that this conversation is not over, before replying, “We were just talking about our plans to go and watch the schools girl basketball team game on Saturday night.” She pauses only for a second before continuing, “You know what, why don’t you join us? The more the merrier!” Shooting me a quick grin before turning back to Matt and waiting for his answer. God she just loves trying to play cupid, I can already tell.
“Alright, sounds good to me,” he responds giving everyone a warm smile. As the rest of our table return to normal conversation, Matt turned to me with a slightly shy smile. “Hey Violet, would you maybe want to hang out for a bit after the game on Saturday? We can go and grab some dessert somewhere or something.”
I think about his offer only for a second before replying with an affirmative answer; he had me at the mention of dessert.
The rest of the school day passed with much hassle, and as the final bell rang everyone shot up from their seats and made their way out. I said a quick goodbye to Alice before making my way to Mr Hamilton’s office to talk to him about a few questions I had about our chemistry assignment. After about half an hour I was finished with my question, and I’m sure Mr Hamilton was growing tired of my voice. I stopped quickly by my locker to grab a few things before walking out of the school relieved that I now had two days off from it.
