I scrambled backwards across the rock, yet the dragon simply looked at me. "Why do you run?" My eyes widened. I stumbled to my feet, then ran out the cave mouth. The light was fading fast, the cold snow seeping through my thin, dirty servant's clothes. I knelt in the snow, my lips moving silently, a prayer to the heavenly emperor.
The dragon walked out, his feet making huge imprints in the snow. "Come, it's too cold out here."
I stayed in the snow, letting the cold remind me of what I was. My lips moved faster, my teeth clinking in the cold. The dragon moved closer, and I closed my eyes against him. Against it. His paw came out and swept me up. "What are you doing!?" I cried, struggling against his grip. He walked back into the cave, and blew water over the floor. "Look at yourself," he said, putting me in front of the puddle. My skin was going blue, and my teeth chattered. I wriggled from the dragon's grip, and crawled towards the fire. I let it warm me, and the dragon curled up behind me, giving me extra warmth.
Suddenly, a chilly wind blew in, and almost put out the fire. I shivered in the near dark, but the dragon spat another ember onto the wood, and pushed some more kindling into the fire. Then, he turned around, and blew into the mouth of the cave, and the gust of wind was pushed, and held, by the dragon's breath.
The flames sent shadows across the wall of the cave, and I could imagine people dancing, leaping, jumping, spinning, twirling.
I leaned back against the dragon, and took a final bite of the tiny apple. As I was about to throw it away, the dragon knocked it into the fire. The flames leapt high, the light bright against the night outside. "Thank you. For saving me..."
"Ailong."
"Loving Dragon..." My voice faded away, and I fell into a deep sleep.
