Part Two
I watch the car behind us, it’s following us. My chest doesn’t tighten though, I know this car and the people in it. The car lurches to a stop, Ms. Hodgson pulls into a spot in front of the State Hospital. I glance at the front doors and shake my head. What have I become?
Looking out the passenger window I see that they didn’t stop. They’ve slowed down, almost to a stop and they both stare back at me. I can’t decipher their faces, at least not with the few seconds they gave me before they fly down the road. The sound of the hummer disappearing into the silence of the air.
“Stephen, you have to get out of the car. I know this isn’t the place you want to be, but-”
I cut Ms. Cecily off. “I know, I know. I have to go.” I pause and to myself I whisper, “Alec, I love you.”
