"I...I..."
"Miss Granger do you need me to leave?" Asked Dumbledore, noticing her sudden panic, her eyes darting from left to right.
He didn't need for her to answer him to understand that the best was to let them alone. "I will pace around the grounds, it has been a while since I've had a peaceful walk around Hogwarts" he indicated as he stood up and directed his step towards the door. "Ah! Severus!" He called after, "let her speak, don't interrupt her, open that heart of yours."
With these last words, he was gone, praying to Merlin that everything was going to be alright.
Severus ebony eyes went back to his student, wondering if he should be worried or annoyed. He waited for her to find the courage to speak noticing how hard this situation seemed to her.
"There are a million ways I could say this...Sir...but I can't seem to find the right words" she cried, a tear falling on his hand - still holding tightly onto hers. "I'm so scared."
"What frightens you, Ms Granger?" His heart was tearing apart, his teeth clenching at the mere idea that she was tormented by something. "Whatever it is, you're not alone..." he took a deep breath, knowing that he was going to cross a line, "I will ensure your safety."
She looked up at him, amber meeting ebony, a moment of pure care and love, before he looked away, uneasy. Something he thought long lifeless was drumming inside his chest, hurting him in the most beautiful way he could imagine.
"They say that loves has no limits, no barriers." She whispered, her eyes not leaving his face, tracing every sharp curve around his jaw to his lips - forever engraving them in her mind. "Someone I cherish used to say that our love will conquer time or death." He turned around to look at her, wincing at the unknown emotion portrayed through her glowing orbs. "Yet here I stand Professor Snape, in front of you, and the passion that once bore these noble obsidian eyes as they lay on me, exists no more. I yarn every day for your touch, the way your rough finger traced my naked body right after we made love to each other, or your lips, those same lips that swore to love and protect me until death do us part. You are a man of your words Severus, even in the future. Yet why does it seem that all I want right now is to grab onto a man who doesn't even remember us, and never let go?"
The tears she was holding onto now fell like a rainfall, her teeth seizing her lower lips, containing her sobs. His eyes drifted to her bloodied lip and with the most delicate action, he cupped her cheek with one hand and used his thumb to free her bruised lip.
He didn't speak nor move from the closeness. Hermione's eyes were desperately searching for her husband behind those of the man before her. It was excruciating. She had opened her heart to him in a way she had never done before - even when they had been together. Yet her heart was aching, killing her. Although she tried to ignore it, being away from his love only caused her heart to skip beats and struck and at an unregular rhythm - as if searching hopelessly for its better half.
"Say something," she thought, knowing that she had lowered her walls and he would probably hear her. She didn't have the strength to speak, too scared that if she did, the thin string that kept her linked with him would be ripped in half.
Severus had heard her, yet his mind was searching urgently for a solution he simply couldn't seize. She had told him that he was the special man she loved. Everything unveiled to him, like a red carpet full of thorns, each spiking deep inside his feet, stinging him. However, the further his mind puzzled the pieces together, the pain dissipated, the thorns morphing into rose petals. He was the man that taught her to be such a skilled legilimens and occlumens, yet when? In the future? How was that even possible? Suddenly he understood everything, yet one question lingered on the tip of his tongue.
"Last time, in my classroom" he finally spoke, causing her head to snap towards him, "you did say 'husband' am I correct?"
She nodded back at him, intertwining her fingers with him, "the most magnificent husband I could have ever dreamed of marrying."
He searched in her golden eyes for a sign of deception, but he found none. Severus could feel the pureness of her words, her heart reaching out to him, begging for his acceptance.
"Ms Granger" she flinched, "Hermione, please explain to me. How is it possible for us to be, engaged, in...the Soul-Bound vow! Is that how we bonded?"
"Everything happened at the beginning of the year. I knew you had some involvement to do in the war so I started to spy on you." She explained, "but who was I fooling?" her laugher made him smile, "you were, and are, the best in that area. Since then, we sought for each other's company until one day you kissed me. From that moment onwards, I was yours, forever."
Hermione hadn't noticed, but while she was speaking, the walls around her memory had faltered. He had seen everything, from the moment she had lingered a little too long in the secret bathroom to their passionate burst in the hallways at night. Tears of sadness were forming in his eyes, feeling the pain she was experiencing since she had arrived here. The love, her love was intoxicating. It was as if, the moment her mind opened a door to him, he could feel every emotion she tortuously hid from him.
"During the war, you were my salvation. You had become my shelter, my home. And then it happened. You were attacked by Nagini, Voldemort believing you were the master of the elder wand. I couldn't be there for you when you died Severus I'm so sorry." She cried, pulling his hand closer to her face, resting against it, "I promised to always stand by your side for better or for worse, but you had other plans. But now I don't know what to believe! I told you already everything last time during detention..."
"What are you talking about Miss Granger? What detention?"
Lowering his hand to have a better access to her face, he took her hands in his, "Hermione this is the first time I hear you meddled with time or our liaison in your timeline."
