Thanksgiving

we began on the road at around 3 am.

hazel, Bianca, and i had fallen asleep in the back of the car on each other and mom and dad had stayed awake.

but, i did wake up around 5. we were parked at a gas station. hazel was leaning on my shoulder and Bianca on hers, both asleep. i heard the door close and i let my eyes focus on my dad who just stepped in. he put his head in his hands and mom slid her hand onto his back, rubbing slightly. "i know you're stressed, baby."

"they invited us to have dinner with them," he said. "i don't know what i should do, marie. keep them from their grandchildren?"

"possibly they feel regret," she reassured. "have they reached out to your brother?"

i hadn't seen uncle kenny in years. the last time i did, i was just about 3. he was still a teen when my mom and dad had me, and he left immediately for college when he was 18. ever since then, kenny never came home. i don't blame him.

dad softly whispered, "you know they wouldn't," he continued. "but i've texted him. wished him and jack a good thanksgiving, congratulated on their new baby. it'll be hard facing my parents alone."

jack? baby? holy shit. was uncle kenny totally a homo?

"they raised you, baby," she said, "i don't condone their actions, but if you love them for many reasons under that, then i can't blame you. if you wish to visit them, you may. take nico with you if he agrees."

take me to grandpa and grandma's? no way.

"i do not want to live in shame of our family," my dad said, "i am proud of us, of our home."

she bit her lip nervously. "well, my love, you shouldn't worry about it. let me drive, you need rest. when we get to oklahoma, we'll decide."

my grandparents were a pain in my ass. they legit had the confederate flag standing outside of their house, their really, old, gross house. it's a wonder how dad even made it to college, they didn't have much money. maybe a scholarship. maybe a savings account. i don't know.

also, the house wasn't gross because it was old and breaking down, it was gross because of the memories that i've had when we visited.

when i was about 4, my biological mom and dad were having fights, about a year before their divorce. my mom was frighteningly skinny, almost to the point of being a skeleton. her cheeks were sunken in, her eyes popping out and always red. she went off when i was born and my dad began working more often after college in his new well-paying job. she dropped out of college and said it was because she wanted to be a stay at home mom. she was skinny because instead of eating, she took the money my father gave her and went to do drugs. even in our big house, with all of our money, she was still doing shit like that. so, when my dad found out, he got super pissed and all they did was fight when he cut her off.

so, they were fighting. i only know all of this because i eavesdropped on my dad when he told my step-mom about his past when they first began dating. oh well. i was about 8, what can i say?

i didn't remember much, only being 4 and all, but i do remember when my parents began throwing stuff because they were so angry. since we lived in the same town, my grandparents came and took me away from their house for a few hours. i remember crying because they were so loud. i hate to be dramatic because most children of divorced parents have gone through this. but we all deserve to be dramatic sometimes.
