when i saw nico on the stage as audrey, i almost shit myself. and questioned my sexuality.

"Audrey, please don't cry! Would it be so terrible if something had happened to him?" I exclaimed. Nico turned towards me and I gave him an encouraging nod.

"Seymour, what a thing to say!" The audience erupted into murmurs. I caught a glimpse of Mr. Brunner, who looked absolutely astonished. It filled me with joy.

"Well, would it?"

Nico sniffled. "It wouldn't be terrible at all. It would be—a miracle. Not to mention all the money I'd save on Epsom salts and ace bandages."

We were beginning to finish out the scene, seeing a new sparked interest from the audience.

"That's all behind you now, Audrey. You've got nothing to be ashamed of," I said. I head the intro to the song began to play. "You're a very nice person and I always knew you were. Underneath the bruises and the handcuffs, you know what I saw? A girl I
respected. I still do."

   "Lift up your head
Wash off your mascara
Here. . . take my Kleenex,
Wipe that lipstick away
Show me your face
Clean as the mornin'
I know things were bad
But now they're okay," I sung, standing over him. He looked up at me, his eyes twinkling with nerves.

"Suddenly Seymour," I sang, partially towards the audience, but still kept my eyes on Nico for him to know I was going to be with him this whole time. "is standing beside you.
you don't need no makeup,
don't have to pretend
suddenly, seymour
is here to provide you
sweet understanding,
seymour's your friend."

I gave Nico an encouraging wink as he stood, beginning his part. He never really sung in front of many people before, not an audience this big.

He began walking, staring into the distance, as if saying a prayer to God. "Nobody ever treated me kindly,
daddy left early
momma was poor,
i'd meet a man and
follow him blindly
he'd snap his fingers
me, i'd say
'sure'."

"suddenly, seymour," His voice began to open up in a beautiful tone I'd never heard before from him. "is standing beside me,
he don't give me orders
he don't condescend,
suddenly, Seymour
is here to provide me
sweet understanding,
seymour's my friend."

I smiled, running towards him. I felt the chemistry between us illuminating the stage. "Tell me this feelin' lasts ' til forever
Tell me the bad times
Are clean washed away."

He moved away, walking onto the fake fire escape. "Please understand that
It's still strange and frightenin'
For losers like I've been
It's so hard to say..."

We smiled at each other as he opened his voice into a wider region, "Suddenly, Seymour!"

"Suddenly, Seymour," a wild grin on my face. We were completely tuning out the audience and in our own little world.

"Suddenly, Seymour," he sang, I ran up the stairs next to him, holding hands and staring directly into each other's eyes.

   "Suddenly, Seymour!"

   "He purified me,"

   "He purified you!"

   "Suddenly, Seymour!"

"Suddenly, Seymour," I sang and Nico's voice reached higher and wider than I thought it could.

   "Showed me I can—"

   "Yes you can!"

"Learn how to be more," Nico closed his eyes a little bit, as if matching the movements in his voice. "the girl that's inside me!"

   "With sweet understanding!"

   "Sweet understanding!"

"With sweet understanding," I gave a slightly noticeable nod.

"Seymour's my...man!" He sang, hitting the note perfectly.

I took him close, and we finished out my favorite part of our scene. I kissed him feverishly, causing gasps from the audience.

But it felt like we were the only people in the room.
