Out of His League

I'm your average sixteen year old teenage girl. I'm just like you. Except I'm not. I have a disease that hasn't been identified yet. That means multiple doctor appointments almost every week. I can do anything you can do, my disease doesn't limit my abilities. The only thing I can't do is go to school, why you ask? Well, with little knowledge of my condition, doctors say that it's better for me to be homeschooled just in case something very severe happens I can get help right away.

I manage though. I have my little sister Sunny by my side and my half-sister Jenna taking care of me, what more could I ask for? My sister Sunny is one year younger than me and Jenna is seventeen years older than me.

Yeah let that sink in.

She was born before my dad met my mom. She was born from another woman That marriage didn't last. Jenna's 'mom' left our dad. Dad was the one who cared for Jen as she grew older. Then he met my mom and they fell in love. My mom gave birth to Sunny and I.

Jenna never considered her birth mother her actual mother. She considered my mom Diane her real mother because she was the only mother figure she has ever had. Jenna, Sunny and I are all close seeing as we watch over the house together. My parents travel the world for work and are rarely home. Which is just fantastic because they have a daughter who could die at any moment and they could be halfway across the world when it happens.

I woke up on a cool Wednesday morning to the smell of bacon and pancakes. I pulled my blonde hair up in a messy bun and put on my black rimmed glasses as I walked down the stairs. I inhaled the sweet aroma and walked to the island in the kitchen. "Good afternoon sleepyhead" Jenna grinned. I yawned and wondered "afternoon?" Jen nodded and replied "yep, twelve thirty little sis" my eyes grew wide as she said the time. Did I really sleep that late?

I heard the patter of footsteps down the hall. It was Sunny. "Hey girlies! Where's the food?" She stumbled over to the fridge to get a glass of OJ. Jenna took three plates out of a high cabinet, dishing all of us a pancake, bacon and some bananas. "Gluten free right Jen?" Sunny asked concerned. "Of course Sun, how long have I been making your food?" She answered. Sunny smiled and picked up her fork and happily gulped down the food. Fun fact, Sunny is allergic to gluten. Yep two out of the three Lewis kids are screwed up. Kidding!

I went to sit at the window seat booth in the house like I normally do. No specific reason. Okay maybe there is a reason and his name is Declan Carter, the hottest guy in town and he just so happens to be my neighbor. Possibly. I smirk as I hear the bell ring for school to be out. Sure enough there goes Declan down the street to the house next to us.

Even better, Declan's room is right across from mine. We both have windows that look into each other's bedrooms and I may or may not have tinted my windows a bit so that I can see him and he can't see me. Maybe. Sorry I'm really creepy! He's just so perfect it's insane. "Uh oh, Vera's drooling over Declan again" Jen teased. "Shut up, I was not!" I retorted "Declan and Vera sitting in a tree k-i-s-s-i-n-g... oh wait that'll never happen because she doesn't even have enough courage to talk to him!" Sunny fired back.

"Sunny! I thought you were on my side" I stated shocked "not today sis. It's been like seven years since you've been crushing on him and you maybe said oh I don't know two words to him that were probably 'hey' or 'bye'" I held my hand to my heart acting hurt.

Partly Sunny was right, I don't really talked to him but that doesn't mean I've never talked to him. It's just hard to talk to someone so perfect knowing that you're not even close to in their league. Plus he'll probably live a long life and I'll be hanging by a thread by the time I'm 25 if I'm lucky and not dead by then. Stop being so depressed Vera jeez! I shook my head and looked away from the window and began eating my breakfast.

***************

I walked into my bedroom and saw Declan on the phone in his. He was smiling and laughing.

Dang that smile.

I've got it bad. I should just go for it! I've liked him since... well forever. Take a chance, that's what I always say but I never even take my own advice. It's decided, if he goes outside or somewhere and I see him I'm talking to him. Should I? Yes, come on Vera, you're kind and smart, you're witty. I kept giving myself compliments in hopes that I would hype myself up. All of a sudden I saw Declan outside his house going to the skate park right down the street. I'm going too!
