Blackmail

The sun was set and the moon was full with all the stars lighting up the night. My eyes were slowly closing when a bright light comes from inside my room on my nightstand next to my bed where I was laying.

It was Declan.

"Hey sweetheart!" I could here the joy in his voice.
"What is so important that you need to share with me at eleven o'clock at night on a school night for you no less?!" I grumbled.
"Well, I was talking to Skylar, the girl I like and I asked advice on how to ask her out, and guess what happened"
"I don't know D. What happened?"
"Guess Vera!"
"You asked her out and she said yes."
"Exactly! See love, I knew you'd get it!"
"Good for you Declan. Why are you telling me this?"
"I thought that you would be proud of me."
"Yeah, sure I'm proud D good job" I sighed.
"Okay this isn't the normal peppy Vera that I know. What is with you sweetheart?"
"Nothing, I'm just tired. I'll talk to you tomorrow, okay?"
"Alright. Promise me you aren't going to bed angry because nothing good comes from that."
"No D, I'm not."
"Okay. Goodnight sweetheart."
"Night Declan." I ended the call and placed my phone back on the nightstand where it was originally set. "I don't get it!" I screamed into my pillow.

Sunny and Jenna must've heard me screaming because they rushed into my bedroom to check up on me. Jen flipped the light switch on "turn that light off!" I hissed. "Alright miss grouchy! You are sitting in the living room and explaining to Sunny and I why you have a stick stuck up your butt right now!" Sunny dragged me downstairs and plopped me down on the leather seat next to the couch. "What is with you missy prissy?!" Jen asked appallingly. "I don't want to talk about it because you will never let me live it down." I pouted "try us." Sunny said seriously.

"Declan likes some other girl at school named Skylar. He asked her out but then he calls me sweetheart and love then he thought of him and I as a couple! I'm just so confused!" I answered honestly. "Ugh, Skylar Keegan. Most popular girl. Of course he likes her, how cliché!" Sunny raised her voice slightly but Jenna shot her a glance, her eyes were saying 'shut it and let Vera speak'. "I don't know what to say sweetie, I'm sorry. I wish I could help" Jenna sympathized. "I'm just gonna go to sleep and not think about it." I stated walking up to my bedroom. I look out my window and Declan was texting.

Skylar most likely.

I heard a beep from my nightstand but I ignored it. I groaned and pushed my body deeper into the bed. Trying to sink so far down that my problems would just disappear.

The next morning I opened my eyes and stared blankly up at the ceiling. I heard another beep on my phone and picked it up.

Hey sweetheart,
I heard you scream
Are you okay? I'm worried

I decided to call him. He clearly was concerned about me. "Vera! Hey, what's wrong? Are you okay? What was that last night-"I stopped him. "It's okay trust me. I'm fine" a smile was dancing on my lips and a laugh was lacing my words. "Are you positive? If anybody hurt you I'll hurt them. If somebody broke your heart, they're stupid to have let you go!" "What did you just call yourself?" I mumbled.

"Huh?" he wondered "nothing D, have fun at school" I laughed. "Okay bye V, I'm coming straight to your house after school okay?" "Alright Declan. Go. To. School. I'll see you soon" I ended the call and looked out my bedroom window into his bedroom and opened it up then stepped onto my balcony. "Bye sweetheart!" He called before shutting his bedroom door and skating to school. Sunny caught up to him and she walked next to him. "Hey SunDay!" I heard him say. At least he's sweet to her. I thought to myself.

After my doctor appointment I came home and saw Declan waiting on the porch for me "I'll let you two talk" Jenna whispered to me. "Okay, So Skylar and I are going on a date tonight and I don't know what to wear. Help me please sweetheart?" Great he just wants to see me for more advice. "Are you better?" He wondered after a while. "Yeah, I guess so" I answered unsurely. He pulled me into a side hug "what's wrong V?"
I shook my head and stayed silent.
"Come on Vera, what's going on?"
"Everything, okay? Everything is going on!"
I pushed his arm away from me.
"What?"
"You Declan, that's what's wrong!"

I stormed into my house. Declan rushed in after me. "VERA!" He called to me as I stomped up the stairs. Jenna was sitting on the couch, concern was evident in her face. I slammed my bedroom door shut but before I could lock it, Declan burst through. His face looked calm but his words were harsh. "What's wrong Vera? Just talk to me!" I slammed face-first into my bed. I mumbled "you don't get it!" He walked over and sat on the bed next to me "what wouldn't I get?" he wondered.
I sat up and moved next to him "you and Skylar are together but I thought you had feelings for me" I calmly replied.
"What do you mean sweetheart?"
"Thats what I mean, do you hear yourself? Do you hear what you're calling me?" "Of course I do V!"
"Okay, then why do you keep doing it?"
"I don't know."
"Clearly." I rolled my eyes.
"Vera, I'm sorry. I am. Really. I just really don't know the answer. Ever since I met you I thought 'where have you been all my life?' Skylar doesn't give me that, she's gorgeous but she's arrogant and cruel."
"Then leave her."
"I can't."
"Why?"
"She is blackmailing me."
"What do you mean?"
"She has a video of me doing some really bad stuff because I got drunk once. If that spreads, I won't have a scholarship anymore."
"Oh... Declan, I'm so sorry."
"It's not your fault. Hey, for what it's worth I do have feelings for you."
