chapter eight
"nobody nose""you have no idea how painful this is!"
~
Normally Friday was Rachel's favorite day of the week. It was the start of the weekend and it was musical night at the local movie theatre. She and Maddie had plans to see Funny Lady with Kurt and Blaine after Blaine had won four free tickets from the local Lima radio station by being the thirteenth caller.
But before Rachel could relax with her friends she had to survive gym class.
"The gym credit is bogas!" Vivian complained as she laced up her sneakers.
Ariana sighed in agreement and fixed her gym shirt while Maddie studied herself in the mirror, pulling her hair into a high ponytail.
"Oh please you guys know it's not that bad. Plus it helps us with dance. Besides, today we're playing softball how bad can it be?" Maddie asked.
Rachel bursted out from one of the changing stalls. "It's gonna be horrible." She replied, slamming her CCD duffle bag onto the bench that Vivian had been using to tie her shoe. "I may be able to hold my own when it comes to a dance class or an audition but softball is a no from me. I don't do well with things flying at my face."
Maddie giggled and walked over to Rachel, throwing an arm around her shoulders, "Oh c'mon it won't be so bad." She smiled and led her out of the locker room while Rachel tried to protest.
Maddie was picked as a team captain which meant that Rachel, Maddie, and Ariana were on the same team. Vivian ended up getting picked third by the other captain, Edith Markham. Rachel zoned out during the game and finally snapped out of her daze when Maddie told Rachel that she had picked her to be the umpire, because it was an easy position that Rachel would do okay in.
Rachel believed her friend, and squatted in position, her gym teacher forgetting to tell her that there's a special helmet umpires wear to protect their faces.
It all happened so fast, "Rach! Look out!" Maddie yelled, Rachel looked up to see a softball flying directly at her nose.
"Oh no." was alls she could muster before the ball hit her face and Rachel was passed out on the ground. Maddie was standing over her and in the background Rachel thought she might have heard someone, maybe Ariana, ask if Rachel was alive. "Yeah, I'm alive," Rachel responded, sitting up, "Just someone please get me to the nurse!"
Maddie and Vivian bent down to help Rachel up, "We're on it!" Vivian peeped as Rachel dizzily stood on her own two feet.
The doctor came back into the examination room, holding an x-ray of Rachel;'s nose "Yep, it's definitely broken." He confirmed.
