chapter twelve
"friendly competition""If you change your mind, I'm the first in line!"

Rehearsals had been kicking Rachel's butt, but the brunette had yet to complain. This just confirmed that she was in the right place, the people she was surrounding with were all working hard in putting effort, where as she had to carry the weight in the new directions (only to receive criticism when she was given rightfully deserved solos!). Fiona let the girls break for water and Rachel couldn't help but feel like all of the hard work they were putting into this weeks number were going to go to waste.
Usually when the new directions had really good group numbers they wanted to show off they would host a talent show or an— invitational.
Rachel's eyes lit up as the idea came to her, and as Ms. Sopranos began to call the girls back over to run the song Rachel couldn't stop her hand from shooting up in the air.
"Ms. Soprano, if I may?" Rachel asked once she had received Fiona's attention. She nodded for the girl to continue, and Maddie couldn't help but raise an eyebrow in suspicion. "I can't help but love this number, and I would hate for all this rehearsal to go to waste if we're not going to use this number for regionals." Rachel prefaced, "Forgive me if I'm overstepping by bringing up the New Directions, but whenever we had a number we were particularly proud of we would host an invitational for competing teams to watch! Now I know invitationals are more for before sectionals, but I don't see what the harm in hosting one now is!" Rachel smiled, the pace of her voice growing faster and more excited the more she explained.
The rest of the girls were silent while they watched Fiona contemplate Rachel's rather smart idea.
"I think that is an exceptional idea Miss Berry. I will get in contact with the school board as to how to set this event up and I will keep you ladies updated on this. For now we'll run the number but congratulations Miss Berry on thinking outside the box." Fiona sent the girl a proud look, and Rachel couldn't help but beam.
She was finding her place with the Sopranos, and it felt good.
The bell on top of the Lima Bean door jingled and Maddie and Rachel scanned the cafe for their two favorite warblers as they unbuttoned their coats. They spotted the boys comfortable at a table more towards the back, and they quickly weaved their way over.
"Sorry we're late, traffic was horrendous." Maddie groaned as she took a seat.
"No you're fine, we were early anyways. I hope you don't mind that we ordered for you." Blaine assured the girls as he pushed their beverages and scones towards them.
