COMMAS SAVE LIVES!
I cannot tell you how important grammar is to a story. A lack of commas could literally turn Thanksgiving into cannibalism.
(Ha, that almost was published saying a lack of comas)
Anyways! Here's some good ways to remember when to use commas.
1. FANBOYS.
Now, I know you all will NEVER forget that word, but in this instance it doesn't stand for the mythical race of male fangirls. Instead it means
For
And
Now
But
Or
Yet
So
Anytime you have one of these words in a sentence, you should probably use a comma right before it.
2. READ YOUR SENTENCE OUT LOUD.
Silly as it may seem, this might actually help. Have you ever heard of a breath mark? Well, commas are the breath marks of words. When you say your sentence out loud, note where you stop for a breath, a dramatic pause, or a pause for emphasis. Where ever you pause, there should most likely be a comma.
3. THOUGHTS.
Commas can also be used to separate your thoughts, as it is being used right now, or in the paragraphs above. Makes sense, doesn't it?
4. (PARENTHESES.)
Have you ever seen sentences that have parentheses i the middle of them, just so that they can add in a little detail wihout making the sentence too long? Commas are good for that too. Here's an example.
The boys, wearing their matching shirts, went to the park.
Get it? Good.
Now you know how to use commas! Congrats!
And, of course,
Let's eat, grandpa doesn't have to have a comma.
It could be
Let's eat grandpa.
If you're into that kinda thing.
