I once asked someone
How they knew they were in love.
This someone had been married
Many times before,
So I had thought that they
Might know something on the subject.
Certainly, they knew more than me,
In any case.
However, I was not prepared for
Their cynical --
If likely accurate --
Reply.
"Love is a fool's game,"
They had said.
"One that is neither won nor lost,
For it never truly ends.
No one asks to play it,
Yet more often than not
The ones who seek it
Never play it.
Not for real.
And those who shy from it
Are the ones cast blindly into it.
They might fight it for a time,
But eventually it consumes them.
They can't help it.
You can't blame them, either.
Still, that doesn't answer your question,
Does it?
No, I would suppose not."
They never did answer my question,
But by that point I wasn't
Really too interested anymore.
By that point I was
Wondering whether or not
I really wanted to play.
I wasn't so sure.
But then...
It didn't make much difference,
Did it?

PoetryIf you're one of those folks that think that all poems need to rhyme, I'm sorry. In any case, this is a simple collection of poems. A few of them rhyme. But most of them don't.
