( chapter sixteen; underwAter )▂▂▂▂
THERE WAS A long knock on the front door of the house, causing Madison to close the fridge. She shoved the grape she was holding into her mouth as she headed down the hallway. After Noel kissing her last night, her mind was, once again, all over the place. She hadn't spoken to any of the girls, mostly because she didn't want Hanna to ask about it. Madison reached for the door handle and opened it.
"Jason." She let out a surprised gasp along with a wide smile, "Hey. When did you get back into town?"
"Last night." Jason replied, but he didn't look pleased.
A small line formed between her eyebrows, "Oh, why -- uh, why didn't you call?"
"I came to surprise you." She watched his arms fold and his expression remained unreadable, "But it looked like you were busy."
She let out a nervous chuckle, her eyebrows still crushed together, "What are you talking about?"
"The guy on your porch." Jason replied causing her stomach to twist. He noticed how her eyes changed, "You know, the tall, dark haired guy. Leather jacket. The one you were kissing."
Madison let out a breath she'd been holding in for too long that she felt like she could pass out, "I can explain that."
"No need." Jason responded. He let out a sad laugh, shaking his head before taking a step back from the door, "You know, it's funny. The day we first kissed, you told me all guys act the same, treat you the same. But honestly, Madison, have you ever thought that maybe the problem is you?"
Her eyes had filled with tears as he spoke. She swallowed harshly, frowning at him, "Excuse me?"
Jason let out a bitter laugh before turning to walk away. As he began to head down the path, she rushed after him, curling her hand around his arm and pulling him round to face her, "Jason, stop. You have no idea what went on. I pulled away from him."
"Really?" Jason frowned down at her, taking his arm out of her grasp, "Because from where I was standing, you sure as hell didn't."
She remembered the hesitation. The stupid hesitation. Words seemed to evaporate from her brain and Madison was left with inaudible stuttering.
"You make out like you can do no wrong, but you're constantly the one putting yourself in situations where maybe the men do act the same." He yelled in anger, "Maybe that's why that day, that guy didn't call you back. Were you hooking up with someone else behind his back too?"
