One Year Later

AN ENTIRE YEAR had passed since Alison DiLaurentis went missing and everything had changed. That night was a mystery. Nobody knew what happened, or if they did, they hadn't told anyone. Rumours floated around that she'd been murdered, which was understandable. After a year, there was nothing else to suspect.

Spencer, Aria, Emily, Hanna and Madison grew more and more apart after Alison's disappearance. To the point where they barely spoke five words to each other anymore. Alison was the only reason they became friends in the first place. They were all very different. And without Alison, they had not much reason to be together.

Aria Montgomery and her family moved to Iceland after the disappearance, her dad had taken a sabbatical and taken the entire family. But today was the day they were moving back into their house in Rosewood. Her mom was insistent that she call one of the four girls she was once so close to, but Aria kept pushing it off.

Hanna was shopping in the mall with a friend she'd grown close to over the past year, Mona Vanderwaal. She had resorted to stealing items every now and again, along with Mona. As she put on a pair of sunglasses, she spotted one girl she use to call her bestfriend, Spencer, shopping on a higher level of the mall and decided to go talk to her.

Madison was on the same level, trying on some deep red high heels in the shoe section. She posed in the long length mirror, smiling at her choice because they were perfect.

"Not sure any of the teachers will allow you to wear those to school." A voice said behind her. She recognised it as she glanced at the reflection of the figure. A small grin stretched on Madison's lips as she saw Hanna and Spencer stood behind her, two people she had barely spoken to in the past year, but she missed.

She turned around, shrugging a little, "Thought you knew me, Han? I'm not bothered what they say."

"Well, you might be when you break your neck." Spencer replied, glancing at how high they were.

Madison chuckled, "Don't worry, Spencer, they're not for school. I just thought I'd treat myself."

Madison sat on the small armless chair, beginning to take the shoes off again and replacing them with her own converse ones. Spencer drew in a nauseaus breath as she glanced between the two of them, "Did you see the paper today?"

Madison felt her heart sink a little, knowing exactly what she meant. It was still a difficult subject to think about. She nodded, looking up from her shoes to Spencer, "Yeah."
