astin

I groan as my phone blares through the silent morning, waking me from my peaceful sleep.

"Go away," I mumble into my pillow, even though it was hardly a pillow.

"That tickles." Kyle mumbles, letting out a morning cough and tightening his grip on my waist.

I sigh, realizing that for the third night in a row, he'd snuck into my room. I had told him since the first day he was here, that I didn't want him sleeping in the same bed as me because I knew where it would lead.

Of course the jackass ignored me and snuck into my room as soon as he could every night. Cue eye roll.

"Kyle," I whine, but he just pulls me closer. My alarm goes off again and I feel him sigh.

Jackass.

"Good morning, baby." Kyle sits up on his elbow and looks down at me. I still wasn't used to his morning voice by any means so to say I didn't melt just a little would be a lie.

"I told you to stay out of my room." He meets my frown with a grin and shrugs. He leans down to give me a kiss and I move my head. "No. Don't come in my room at night again."

He huffs like a child before rolling us over so I'm straddling him. "I'm leaving for more than a week and this is how you do me?"

I roll my eyes again and get off of him, "Speaking of you being gone for a week, how do you plan on explaining to your honorary child that you're not going to be here for her third birthday?"

It almost hurt to admit, but my baby girl was turning three in exactly ten days. Kyle was leaving later on today and wouldn't be back until the Sunday after next, two days after Blake's third birthday and a day after her party.

"Her birthday's on the 22nd right? Ugh, I don't know. Do you think I should tell her now, or...?" He trails off, following me to the bathroom.

I shrug, "You can do whatever you want. Just know it'll break her heart and I'll have the be the one to deal with her." I start brushing my teeth, slightly aggravated at the position he's putting me in. I rinse my mouth out and lean against the counter, waiting for him to finish.

I walk behind him as he grabs his things and starts to pack for his road trip.

"I never thought I would realistically say this, but I honestly, genuinely cannot wait for the off-season." I pout up at him and he sighs before kneeling in front of me.

"I think this is the last time we'll be gone so long." He rubs circles in my thighs with a sad smile.

"I'm going to miss you. Even though you ignore what I say and sleep in my room." I chuckle a little and his smile widens.

"I love you, Astin." Kyle mumbles into my thigh while I rub his head. I hum and move him over, standing and looking over his things.

"You're forgetting something." I muse, raising an eyebrow at him.

He looks at me, puzzled, confused as to what I'm talking about. I go over to my shelf and take down Blake's favorite stuffed animal, a turtle named Charles, and drop it into his bag.

"You forgot him last time and she wouldn't live it down."

He picks it up and smiles down at it, before setting it back down. He kisses my forehead and I sigh.

"Mommy? Daddy?"

We turn towards my door where Blake's head is poking in. We share a look before Kyle gestures for her to come over. We sit at the edge of my bed and Kyle hoists her on his lap.

"Hey, princess. I have to work for a little while, okay? And because of that, I won't be here." He says slowly, making sure she understands.

"Where are you going?" She asks, tilting her head up at him with a questioning stare.

"Baby...Kyle's going to miss your birthday." I intercept; there was no need to tip toe around it.

She frowns and crosses her arms. "You said you would take me to the horses."

Kyle glances at me and I shake my head. It was his problem to deal with, not mine.

"I'll take you when I get back, princess."

She sniffles before climbing off Kyle's lap and into mine, snuggling into my chest.

"Prin-" He tries to reach out to her and she moves around him.

"I'm not your princess, Kyle." She mumbles. I could feel her tears soaking my shirt.

"Blake," His voice cracks and dread takes over.

"I don't want you to be my daddy anymore. My daddy wouldn't miss my birthday."

"Hey, hey. None of that. Okay, you asked Kyle to be your dad and he honorably said yes. You're upset that he won't make your birthday; that's fine. Your birthday is going to pass and you'll get over it, but you can't get over not having your dad."

I can feel thin threads pulling at my heart. It hurt (a lot) to admit that Blake was gone. But to see her replacing him with Kyle hurt worse. And even worse than that, not being able to say anything about it because he made her so happy. He made her feel like a daddy's girl and that's something I couldn't give her no matter how hard I tried.

She sniffles some more and turns around. "I'm sorry, daddy."

Kyle lets out a breath of relief and pulls Blake back into his arms.

"It's okay, princess."

It wasn't, but it was too early in the day and I was too drowsy to fuss about it.

"Alright, let me get you washed up while Kyle finishes packing."

She pouts, but comes into my arms anyway.

"When I get back we're going to go the see the horses." Kyle promises. Blake holds out her pinky and Kyle hooks his around it.

"Pinky promise."

I peck Kyle's lips before sauntering off into the bathroom to wash Blake.
