Chapter 6: Kimberly
I laced my fingers through Chris's hand. He pretended to twirl me, even though we were sitting on the ground. "Chris! Come on." I whispered. He kissed my ear. It tickled.
"Why?" He questioned raising his blond eyebrows. 'Not the eyebrows!' I cringed. It was always the the eyebrows. (Or should I say his half eyebrow... they kind of just cuts off randomly.) He bounced off of his knees and tackled me. He enveloped me into a huge hug and put his head on top of mine. He leaned over to my ear and whispered, "Hi. I'm Olaf and I like warm hugs." I pushed him off of me.
"You're insane." But I didn't mean it. He laughed.
"That's where you have it backwards. YOU'RE insane and I'm perfectly normal." He grabbed a handful of popcorn and threw a piece to me. I caught it in my mouth and crunching it between my teeth. Everyone was staring at us. Except Jade and Cameron. They were always in their own world. I just shrug it off. Sometimes Chris and I are like that too.
"HEY! Love corners!" Josh screamed, his arm around Fiona. She threw a pillow over at them. Jade caught it.
"Knock it off." Jade turned, her eyes burning a dark shade of red. A fiery brown. Chris and Fiona cringed. So did everyone else. She flicked her head back to Cameron. She layed it down on her Cameron's chest. He flattened her hair onto her back. Smoothing it out. He leaned over to whisper to her. I couldn't make it out. I looked at Chris.
"What the hell was that?" He shock his shoulder, a look of shock on his face. Jade wasn't known for freaking out. She usually bottles her anger up. Or talked to Cameron. Or sometimes J. C when Cameron was unavailable. Rosemarie was sleeping on J. C's shoulder, he was on his phone texting someone. I tried to make it out, but every time I got close he would exit off of messaging and pretend to be on Instagram. Chris saw my frustration and stood up. He walked over to J. C, pretending to tip toe his knees going up as high as his chin.
(For what?)We all stifled our giggles. Chris bent down and snatched J. C's phone.
"HEY!" J. C screamed, which woke up Rosie. He gently placed Rosie off his shoulder, giving time for Chris to run.
"I LOVE YOU!" He screamed, reading J. C's messages. "I'M FINE! JUST NEED A SHOWER! BUT ROSIE'S SLEEPING ON MY SHOULDER!" He switched voice to a higher pitch, still running from J. C. "THAT'S FINE! GOODBYE." He switched back as J. C almost caught up to him. He read the last message. "LOVE YOU TOO... Mindy?" He stopped, J. C running into him. "Your older sister's name is Brenda." Rosemarie stood up, walking over to J. C.
"Who's Brenda?!" She asked, her cheeks becoming red, like the salsa sitting on the coffee table. (Aw... SALSA! I love salsa!) J. C looked at her, biting his lip. (A nervous tick he has.) Everyone had turned their attention to the three of them.
"Um... she's..." J. C was pulling at the curls on his head. (Another tick.) Cameron whispered something to Jade and she pulled herself off his lap. He got up and went over to J. C.
"Mindy is..." Cameron started, but Jade interrupted him.
"SHE'S THEIR SISTER. WHO HAS CANCER!" She slapped her hand over her mouth and ran out of the room. Cameron ran after her. I heard a door slam. Silence. Not one movement. Not one sound. Rosie looked at J. C. He started at his feet.
"I'm sorry I should've..." he was stopped short when Rosemarie hugged him.
"No. I'm sorry. I shouldn't have jumped to conclusions. I'm sorry. How far is she along?" Rosie asked, her face pressed against his chest.
"They say she has um... 3 weeks. And I haven't told Cameron. I told Jade though." He quickly added, "But only because she's my best friend, and she used to be friends with Mindy."
"Oh, okay. How old is Mindy?" Rosie added, letting go of J. C.
"She's 12. Yeah. 12." He pulled at the picture from his phone case, (which he'd been fiddling at for the whole conversation.) It was a little girl about 4 with wild red hair.had J. C's eyes. They sparkled. Like emerald green jewels. Kinda like Jade's eyes, when they were green anyway. "That was the day before we found out." J. C had stuffed his hands into his pants. He looked as sad as a person at a funeral. (Which, sadly, soon he will be...) I had unnoticed tears on my cheeks. Chris wiped them off. I put my head into his shoulder. He rubbed a hand over my back. I sobbed. Rosie still hadn't let go of J. C. Jade and Cameron still hadn't come back downstairs. Upstairs was silent. Downstairs was silent. Then the phone rang. Karista went over to it, placing it on speaker phone. The same voice came back.
"Mindy says hi."
