I didn't want to wake up to my older brother yelling in my face, but that's life. Unfair. Unfair as in not having a mother's shoulder to cry on or moving to Hillsdale from Chicago.
"Wake up, sis. You're all ready 10 minutes late." Kevin, my brother, opened my curtains and let in the luminous rays of our Michigan sun.
"Liar. It's six-fifteen."I sent him a quick, meaningful glare then tossed my blanket off the bed.
"I know."He produced a cheeky grin that made me smile.
"Get out."I snapped and shoved him out of my room.
I began my morning routine in a rush. My hair's tangles released themselves as I brushed my hair. Rushing down the stairs, I peered around the corner to spy something unusual. My dad was talking to Dan and Kate Hound, my best friend's parents. Carrie's parents to be specific. But where was Carrie?
I approached the three of them with hesitance, waiting for an immediate answer. Nothing was uttered until I asked the question haunting my mind for the past few seconds.
"Where's Carrie?"
At my words, Kate let out a sob and weeped into her husband's shoulder. I pitied her sadness but was overwhelmed with concern. Kate found her voice and answered.
"We don't know. She's been kidnapped. I went to check in on her and her bed was empty."
I swear Satan grabbed my heart and squeezed what blood was in it out. I widened my eyes and tears rained down my face. Dad embraced me and whispered soothing words in my ear.
The last time Kate cried was at my Mom's funeral. Kate and Mom were the best of friends. With Mom gone, Kate was utterly devastated as I was. Carrie and Dan weren't effected as much as Kate and I were. I recall the day as if it happened yesterday.
"How much longer until we leave?"I asked impatiently.
"A few more minutes. Calm down." Kevin warned.
We sat in silence except for the sound of Mom mumbling prayers to God. Footsteps resounded in the sanctuary. I swore it was Mom. When the sound of a gun being fired erupted, I jumped up startled.
"Mom!"I had screamed.
A figure clad in black scurried out of the church, unaware of two teenagers running to their mothers side. I felt warm liquid pool beneath me as I cradled her limp head in my lap. Kevin called for help and Mom slipped away.
A head injury by bullet was almost fatal. I knew she wouldn't make it, but I held the benefit of the doubt anyways. Dad rushed to our sides, dialling 9-1-1 with unshed tears in his eyes.
"I love you, all of you." She murmured, clearly in distress.
Then her eyes glazed over and I knew her soul left mine.
I grabbed my jacket and walked out the door. If someone thinks they can steal my best friend and get away with it, they need to think again. Hide and seek needs players and I'm looking until I can't anymore.
