Close Call

It was getting chilly as I searched for Carrie. I'd been outside for nearly 8 hours, except for a break Kate forced me to take. I was at Baw Beese's park, past the beach where people swim in the summertime.

I heard a low growl in the trees. My eyes trailed to where the sound began. If my eyes got any wider, they would probably explode. I backed away, frightened of the large coyote stalking toward me. As I went to grab my keys, my shaking hands dropped them.

The coyote stepped on my keys, blocking me from escaping. I could try to outrun the coyote, odds are it would catch me first. Damn

Thump! I hit my back on a tree I didn't realize was there. What am I going to do? My phone was in the car, being of absolutely no use. Call for help? Like anyone would hear me.

Suddenly,  a whistling sound interrupted my thoughts. The coyote cried out in pain, a knife lodged in his shoulder. Another knife got stuck in the bark above my head. I searches for the person who threw the knives so skillfully.

"Looking for these, Foust?"I made instant eye contact with Cameron Faulkner. He was a popular boy in the crowd, infamous around Hillsdale county. He's notorious for his tough attitude and being the fastest runner in the county for track. What was he doing here, helping out a semi popular girl? My friends and I were known as the inbetweeners. Not preps nor geeks. Simply in between.

"Sorry about your friend, it's too bad."He whispered sincerely.

"I guess I'll be leaving now."

I walk past him and open my car door with shaking hands. His hand rests on my shoulder and I feel Cameron's hot breath fan my neck.

"You better watch out, there's more to your story than you think."

I turn around and he releases my shoulder but I stare up at him in disbelief. Never once had Cameron spoken to me, in private, like this. Hopefully he doesn't get use to it, because I surely won't.

Plus it's the first time a guy has talked to me with such close proximity. I don't like the vibe I get from him.

I should trust Cameron though. He was Carrie's boyfriend until they broke up a few weeks ago. He was good to her, and I should be thankful for that. She deserved a good guy like him, always complimenting her and opening doors and whatnot.

I've always been suspicious of Cameron Faulkner. He had a secret and I think he's involved in Carrie's disappearance.
