annie's pov
-
i asked jerry to join me for my remaining breakfast. he told me all funny stories of my dad in the coffee shop. jerry kept repeating five names constantly.
"jerry, who's lauren, johnny, kenzie and hayden?" i ask utterly confused. "oh! i forgot to tell you. those four are your dads most trusted workers. they're all around your age and friendly. well, except hayden. he's pretty hard to get through. he's nice if he lets you in his life. he's never trusted anyone ever since a particular incident happened in his life." jerry sighed.
"what incident?" i was curious about this hayden guy. "well dear, i believe that's not my place to say. you'll have to try and ask him." he said with a laugh. i smile a bit.
after breakfast, jerry and i walk out to the cold, busy streets of new york city. "is it always like this?" i kind of yelled because of all the noise. "eh, you'll get use to it." he smiled.
i remembered how yesterday i couldn't get a cab. but, jerry seemed to be more experienced in that. he got a cab to pull over in a matter of seconds! "how did you-" "you'll learn miss." he said. we both laughed and sat down in the yellow taxi cab.
"leblanc cafe, please." jerry said. "of course, the best coffee place on earth! it's ashamed billy leblanc passed." the driver said. i bit my lip and looked down to my lap.
i hate it when people talk about my dads death. i would love to believe that he lives in my heart; but talking about him just makes it harder.
...
"here we are! leblanc cafe." the driver said. jerry paid; which he didn't have to do. we both got out of the cab and waved bye to the driver.
in big, wooden cursive, the sign read: leblanc cafe. i smiled a bit just looking at it. it had a few seats outside with vintage, brown umbrellas. the doors were glass, framed with iron. jerry pulled the huge door open for me and i walked in.
it was a rush. this cafe was definitely the definition of tumblr. fairy lights, exposed ceiling beams, lightbulb lights, wood plank floors and cute vintage tables.
"mr.ande- i mean jerry! hi!" a girl with thick brown hair said. her apron was stained with flour. "mackenzie dear, nice to see you. this is annie, billy's daughter." jerry said pointing to me.
i gave a warm smile and put my palm out as a gesture. "nice to meet you mackenzie." i said. she smiled and wiped the flour on her hands on to her apron. she shook my hand and smiled. "nice to meet you too annie. and please, call me kenzie." she said.
"well, i ought be off. kenzie dear, can you show annie around?" jerry asked with a small cough. "of course!" kenzie smiled. "bye annie, i'll come around soon." jerry smiled. "thank you!" i said before he fully left.
i look back to kenzie who still had that smile on her face. i can already tell she's going to be awesome. "well annie, lets show you around." kenzie said. we walked behind the register where two other people were working. one male and the other female.
"annie, this is johnny and lauren orlando. they're siblings. and johnny's also my lovely boyfriend." she smiled. johnny and lauren turned around and gave me welcoming looks.
"you're mr.leblanc's daughter right?" johnny asked. i nodded. i shook both of their hands. johnny gave kenzie a kiss on the cheek before she swooped me away to the kitchen.
"this is where the goods are made. the coffees made up front." kenzie said. i saw another figure rolling out dough. he had brown, curly hair and fair skin. his apron was a bit messier then kenzie's.
"that's hayden." she whispered in my ear. "he doesn't really talk much." she said. "shy?" i ask. "nope, just... not really a people person." kenzie said again.
"should i try and say hi?" i asked before looking back at hayden. he was putting the dough in the oven. "i mean, you can try. he barely talks to any of us; besides jerry." kenzie said.
"kenz! we need you up front!" i think lauren yelled. "i've got to go. make yourself comfy and i'll show you the rest later!" kenzie said before walking off.
i walk a bit deeper into the kitchen. hayden didn't seem to notice me. "um, hayden right?" i said trying to get his attention.
he started at me for a good minute before nodding. he continued cleaning up the counter. "well, i'm julianna. but you can call me annie." i said. he didn't look up. wow, how awkward.
i sigh and walk to where kenzie, johnny and lauren were. "here annie." lauren said handing me a black apron. it had leblanc written in white cursive; much similar to the sign outside.
"i'm gonna go make some more pastries. kenzie and john will teach you the basics. have fun!" she smiled. i laughed and put on the apron. i tie my hair up in a bun.
let's get started.
