The weekend sped by, Monday arriving rather quickly.
Chad, Troy, and Jason stumbled into class that morning with a likeness to zombies on the hunt for brains, except instead of brains they were looking for their Chemistry homework that they could have sworn they did.
Dark circles gave away their weekend spent playing video games (Chad would have to pay for missing practice with Sharpay and the rest of the cast, but he didn't care), eating way too much junk food to the point that it was almost a cliche, and coming up with ways for Chad to 'whoo' Ryan.
Correction, Troy and Jason tried to come up with ways for Chad to whoo Ryan, while Chad contemplated jumping out of the window. But considering that they were on the second floor, and Chad did not have a death wish - at least, not usually, but with his friends constant chatter and apparent need to embarrass him, he was finding life not so enjoyable at the moment - so he decided against it.
Now Chad was sitting in Homeroom, listening to Ms. Darbus drone on about the play. Though she had given them creative control for the most part - 'them' apparently meaning Sharpay, despite Kelsey being the director -, that didn't stop the enthusiastic drama teacher from talking about it non stop.
Unbeknownst to Ryan, Chad was taking this time to take in every detail of the boys face. Not that he hadn't seen every curve, wrinkle and dot nearly a hundred times, but he never did get tired of the way Ryan's blue eyes twinkled when talking about the things he enjoyed - that 'brightness' that Troy and Jason were so convinced was brought on by himself -. Or the laugh lines that would appease when he got really excited, as well as the dimple that popped up on his rosy cheeks and when he grinned from ear to ear.
He really was perfect.
Unbeknownst to Chad, Troy was watching his best friend checking out his crush, and snickered.
Chad had promised Troy and Jason that he would at least try to talk to the Evans boy today, and Troy planned to make sure that that happened.
It was unneeded, however, as almost immediately after the bell rang, Ryan approached the other at his desk.
Troy and Jason gave their friend a knowing look before exiting the classroom. Kelsey had smirked at Ryan, and Gabriella had grabbed Taylor excitedly, going out into the hallway to talk about what exactly they could be talking about.
Ms. Darbus had left to use the bathroom without giving Chad and Ryan a second glance, leaving the two alone in the classroom.
Chad nervously peered up at the blond who stood expectantly next to his desk, and his nerves almost instantly subsided at the grin the boy gave him, being replaced instead with light, happy butterflies.
"Hey, Ry, what's up?" He tried his best to be casual, returning the blonds grin.
"I just wanted to see if you were okay? You were acting weird all last week, then you missed practice yesterday, and today you look- exhausted." Chad started laughing, but stopped after seeing the pure concern in Ryan's eyes.
His bright eyes
"No, yeah, sorry." He chuckled awkwardly, "I'm just tired from staying up all weekend with Troy and Jason." And then realizing how that sounded, "Uh playing video games! Obviously."
Ryan raised an eyebrow at him, "Obviously." Chad continued laughing awkwardly, being interrupted once again with Ryan's, "What about last week though? You were so- out of it and stand-off-ish."
Chad sighed. This was true. The week after coming out to Troy, Chad had a lot on his mind. Still did. That had been the point of the sleepover (or - uh - hang out. Sleepover sounds so 5th grade-ish) at the Boltons'. His stressed attitude had not gone unnoticed by Troy, nor Ryan, apparently.
Chad forced a smile, "Yeah I just had a lot on my mind..." should I? "In regards off-" ugh, why not? "Figuring myself out." He shot a meaningful look to the other, who seemed to understand what it meant. Which, honestly, was pretty nerve wracking. "You know?"
Ryan did know. He remembered how that felt.
Elementary school, being teased for hanging out with the girls and liking 'feminine' things.
Middle school, crushing on the boys on the track team (he always did like athletes.)
Freshmen year, wondering when he would start liking girls.
The answer to that question was, of course, never. Or at least not how his father expected.
Ryan gave him a reassuring smile, "Yeah, I know. But hey, I'm always here for you, you know that right?"
Chad nodded quickly, his Afro shaking enthusiastically. "We're still on for this afternoon, right? In the auditorium, as usual?" Ryan grinned.
"Of course."
The warning bell rang, and Chad shot out of his seat, to Ryan's amusement.
"See you there Evans." Chad grinned.
"Wouldn't miss it, Danforth."
And with that, the two exited the room, practically running to their next classes. And Ryan's shoes today were not made for running in.
It was worth it, he figured, remembering his crush's words. 'Figuring myself out'. If that meant what Ryan thought it meant, then he was really excited for this afternoon.
Troy and Jason caught up with Chad after their next class, excitedly asking what Ryan had to say, but he simply smirked and shrugged, promising to fill them in later.

A/N: This is a little short and I meant to make it longer, but I started writing it the night before last night, and I meant to finish and post it yesterday but I had class and then got some devastating news that might either push me to write more in this the next couple days, or push me away from it. I guess we'll have to see.
I'm also v busy however so we'll see what happens
