After the steamy encounter; Troy, Ryan, Chad and Gabriella walked out to the parking lot together. Gabriella was the first to leave, her mom having already sent her a text that she was there about five minutes before rehearsal even got out. Sometimes, her mother was too punctual.
She gave Troy a peck on the cheek, and waved goodbye to Ryan and Chad, before running off to her mothers' usual parking spot on the far left side of the parking lot.
"So," Ryan walked up to his sisters car, where Kelsey was pretending to listen to Sharpay's input on the play.
They had taken her car that morning because she preferred it, and it was honestly so much easier to just go along with Sharpay Evans than it was to argue with Sharpay Evans. At least, sometimes.
"Do you want a ride?" Ryan asked, turning back around to the boyish question. He wasn't exactly expecting a yes, considering that no one who didn't have to ride with Sharpay, generally didn't.
Chad laughed, "I would, but-" he glanced up at Sharpay, who was eyeing them suspiciously from her pink convertible, "It looks like you need to have a conversation with that sister of yours." He wiggles his eyebrows, and Ryan groaned.
"Yeah, yeah, you're right." He agreed, looking back at his twin as well. "Oh god, ok, yep. I do." Chad could have laughed at the blond's behavior, but decided that that would be in bad taste.
"I guess I'll see you tomorrow then?" He suggested, and Ryan nodded, grinning. "Right, yeah, uh-" the Evans boy wanted to kiss the other on the cheek, but decided against it, not wanting to go through that just yet.
Instead, he subtly squeezed his hand, causing Chad to grin at him, and Ryan winked before running over to a beaming Kelsey, and an annoyed Sharpay.
Chad decided it was best to leave the two - and Kelsey - to themselves. He walked over to a smirking Troy, who was waiting a good distance away for his dad. "Not riding with Evans?" He asked, clearly already knowing the answer.
The boy shook his head in response, "I would, but-" He glances over to where Sharpay was pulling out of the parking lot, all while arguing with her brother over what had taken him so long. "-Not even Ryan can convince me to deal with that." He admitted, half-joking and half-dead-serious.
Troy laughed, staring down at the ground and shaking his head, "God you're smitten."
Chad gave him a look, "Oh yeah, because you're one to talk."
Troy shrugged, and the two laughed harder. "I also couldn't just leave my best friend hanging." Chad admitted, giving a friendly nudge to the other with his shoulder.
"Well I'm glad you won't forget about us little guys now that you're dating an Evans." He said dramatically, and Chad rolled his eyes.
"Yeah, because that's the same thing as becoming a celebrity, huh?" He shook his head with a laugh.
Troy gave him a curious look, "So, you haven't yet told me what happened after you went to talk to Ryan, but obviously something happened." Troy raised his eyebrows, and the other nodded.
"Yeah, I guess I never did. Well, we sorted things out- uh, obviously." He blushes, and Troy smirked.
"Obviously." He agreed, thinking back to when him and Gabriella caught the two making out just 10 minutes earlier.
"And uh, we're going on a date tomorrow. Before opening night." He explained, blushing harder as his stomach filled with butterflies at the thought.
Troy's eyes widened, "No shit?"
Chad laughed again, "No shit." He confirmed.
"Wow." Troy smiled, thinking back to the state his best friend had been in just a week ago, when he first came out. Confused and scared. And now,
"DANFORTH'S GOING ON A DATE" he yelled, mostly just to annoy his friend.
"Oh he is?" The two spun around to see Coach Bolton giving them a weird look, one eyebrow in place and the other raised in question.
When the two didn't say anything, the older man started to explain that he was parked on the right side of the parking lot, but his phone had died so he couldn't let the two boys know.
"Now, what's this I hear about a date?" He questioned, smirking slightly. "Uh-" he continued, interrupting Troy trying to save his friend, "Weren't you with that Taylor girl? Or no?"
"Uh- yeah, no, you're right." Chad assured him awkwardly. "We uh, we broke up a couple weeks ago, actually."
"Oh?" Jack looked even more confused now. "Isn't that a little fast? I mean it's been awhile since I was dating but-"
"Well it's a lot more complicated than that, dad." Troy tried, suddenly worried for his friends' rather sensitive situation.
"Well we kinda stopped feeling that way for each other awhile before realizing it, so no hard feelings." Chad explained, and Jack nodded. "I see."
He was about to continue, but was interrupted by a nervous Chad, "Actually," he started, unsure.
He glanced at Troy, who was giving him a look that was sure to mean 'you don't have to'. And it was true, he didn't have to. He never did, but this was Coach Bolton, he put on a tough exterior, but he really did care. Besides, the guy was like a second dad to Chad (heh that rhymes), and he did need practice or the real thing.
So finally, he continued, "I'm going on a date with Ryan. Ryan Evans. Tomorrow." The boy was fiddling with his hands nervously, but forced himself to look up at his best friends father.
Jack looked confused for a second, before realization settled on his face. "Oh, I see." Finally, he smiled warmly, and Chad and Troy sighed collectively in relief. "Well, I'm glad. Ryan's a good kid, and he always seemed so lonely-" he trailed off, before looking back at Chad. "I'm proud of you, son."
And yeah, Chad was proud of himself too. Maybe, just maybe, this would be ok.
