"Hey you"
Ryan was back to his smug self as he walked on to the stage to see Chad already sat at the piano, facing the opposite direction of Ryan.
The boy spun around to see the other, and smiled, though caught off guard. "Hey. Sorry, I uh- didn't see you there." Ryan nodded as he walked to the other side of the piano and bent forward over it, his elbows on the shiny black lid and his head resting nicely in his hands.
Chad forced himself to look Ryan in the eyes, ignoring the feeling he got in his gut when making eye contact with the other boy.
'Don't make this weird Chad, just- play it cool.'
"You ok?" Ryan asked seriously, his eyebrows furrowed in concern.
"Uh- y-yeah." Chad stuttered, nodding quickly.
His Afro shook violently and Ryan smiled as the brunette quickly brushed stray curls out of his face.
"Why'd you ask?" Chad continued, sitting up straight and trying to push the butterflies back down into his stomach and hopefully, out of existence.
"Well you have seemed pretty out-of-it ever since this break up of yours."
Chad sighed, "Not you too. Look, I'm fine ok? This had nothing to do with Tay and I's break up." Ryan raised an eyebrow.
"So there is something wrong?"
Chad looked startled, "Uh- no! That's not what I said. I just meant-" the boy was cut off by Ryan laughing.
"Dude, chill. You don't have to explain yourself to me. I just- worry about you, that's all."
Chad tilted his head to the side slightly at the well-dressed boy in front of him.
"What, why?" Now was Ryan's turn to get flustered.
"I just- y'know, you can't do your best in this play if you're all worried about a break up!"
He jumped out of his relaxed position slightly, and went to the other side of the stage in a hurry to get the play's script off of a small desk.
"Here, lets practice!"
Chad raised an eyebrow at the blond, but followed suit, eager to escape the awkward atmosphere of there previous conversation.
The boys read their lines back and forth to each other, practicing tone of voice and deciding where on the stage they would be to deliver a line and how they would look or act while delivering it.
It was pretty standard, Ryan thought, except one thing.
Their characters, Antonia and Bassanio, had an infamous bromance, which often called for touchy movements and close-proximity to Chad.
Normally it wouldn't have been that big of a deal, especially with how accepting and comfortable Chad was with Ryan, despite his being an openly gay guy, but seeing as these caring actions and time spent with the Afro-headed Wild Cat had caused some no-doubt unrequited feelings on Ryan's part, these 'bromance' scenes between the two's characters often sprouted an abnormal amount of anxiety for the blond theater star.
Chad felt these nerves too, but not for the reason Ryan thought.
When first seeing the boys' hand shake when going to rest on his own shoulder, Ryan had assumed it was anxiety from acting, something Chad still wasn't quite used to, or anxious feelings caused by abnormal close-proximity to another dude, and a gay dude at that.
'Don't think like that, Ryan' the boy would scold himself, 'Chad's not like that. He doesn't care that you're gay'
But really Chad was shaking at the odd feelings he got during these scenes.
Not discomfort due to the other's sexual identity or anything of the sort, but feelings of contentment, glee, and butterflies in his stomach, things he should be getting while around his girlfriend.
'Ex girlfriend'
Don't get him wrong, Chad did get those feelings around Taylor at first, but they disappeared rather quickly.
Replaced with the normal happy feelings you get whilst around friends.
'Like Ryan.'
Except, not like Ryan.
But still, the boys trudged through these awkward scenes, trying to appear as normal as possible, for the sake of not only the play and themselves, but each other.
Ryan couldn't let Chad suffer the embarrassment of learning one of his best friends was crushing on him, and Chad couldn't let Ryan think he felt uncomfortable being so intimate with him just because of his sexuality.
The boys were stuck, one still oblivious to his feelings and the other convinced that his feelings could never be requited. Perhaps Taylor was right, and a push by a good friend was what they needed.
The boys decided to wrap up their rehearsal session, claiming it was due to being tired, when really the awkward vibe had gotten the best of both of them, and they needed a break. Less from each other, and more from these confusing feelings.
After cleaning up and some rushed goodbyes, the boys split their ways, both unknowingly walking straight into the hands of a certain four-eyed hero.
