What Matters Most

Chapter two

Present time

Five years ago I thought bringing Sang to live with me would be a nightmare full of mistakes. I didn't know how to take care of a fourteen year old girl. I was nineteen, I could barely take care of myself. I also needed to move out of the apartment I shared with my brothers.

Dr. Robert's helped me find a place for us. My girlfriend Mindy and I got into a few arguments because I was living with a girl she didn't know. Once she met Sang though, she fell in love. Mindy took Sang under her wing and treated her like a sister.

Dr. Robert's, Sang's dad, Mindy and I decided to sit down and figure things out. Sang didn't know her dad was part of the academy and her dad didn't know she was being abused. As soon as I got her out of there. He threw divorce papers at Denise giving her nothing but the house.

Since John was still on a mission that was very dangerous and long, we decided that Mindy would move in with me and help me out. We also decided that until Sang was older, she wouldn't know about the Academy. That meant keeping her from my brothers.

I felt like I was living a double life. It was Mindy's idea of course. She knew all about the Academy and thought it was too dangerous for the sweet girl who was now like a sister to her.

For four years we've kept it a secret and while I was ready to introduce her to my other life, Mindy wasn't there yet. It had to be a joint decision.

Sang was so smart, she graduated a year early and started her college life. She got a job on her own and was adamant on helping with the bills. We took her money but instead of paying bills we invested it and now she's got enough to pay for a year of college.

I made mistakes taking care of Sang but we got through it and now I couldn't imagine her not with me. She brought back the light I needed in my life. Even the guys noticed the change in me. It was like she made me softer, even Mindy couldn't do that. While I loved Mindy, she's told me she could leave without thinking twice. Sang would always be on my side. She loves Mindy but if it came to choosing she would always choose me and I think that's what I needed in my life. Someone that would choose me over anything else.

"I'm leaving baby. Are the guys coming over?" Mindy asked while grabbing her purse and keys. She worked for her dad as a lawyer. Her hours were as screwed up as mine but we made sure one of us was always here with Sang.

"Yeah. We need to go over a few missions we were asked to do. They insisted on coming here because it's so homey." I rolled my eyes. They just liked all the left overs that we had. While they thought it was Mindy who cooked, it was actually Sang. She even made me taco soup today because she wasn't going to be home from classes and work and wanted me to have a decent dinner.

"Just make sure they are gone before Sang gets home." Mindy said.

"I don't understand why you don't want her to meet them. They are good guys."

"I don't want them to overwhelm her. You know how she is with strangers and your brothers are an odd bunch. Plus she's an adult now so you know they will try something with her. She's got a boyfriend. They don't need to mess that up for her." She says with a strange look on her face like she was angry or something. Sometimes I just can't get a read on her.

Mindy wasn't a fan of my team. She hated that I spent so much time with them. She also didn't like that they shared the same girlfriend. There was no way I'd tell her that they broke up because she hit on me and all the guys on the Blackbourne team and every other guy who crossed paths with her. Once they figured out how she was, they kicked her out of their apartment and out of their lives. Mindy doesn't understand them. But she didn't need to. They were my brothers and if you want me in your life then they come too. It was that simple.
