Twenty-Five

Connie went out back for a cigarette, and was there for a good long time. I was still cuddled up to Georgie, and we were just lying down on the couch, but I felt him sit up all of a sudden and my eyes flew open.

"I'm going to see my dad." Georgie said, walking down the hallway to the bedrooms.

So Georgie's plan was to steal Connie's keys and drive to the hospital in her car. The idea terrified me, but I knew it was important to all the cooper kids to see their dad.

I grabbed my cell phone and put it in the pocket of my jeans. Me, Georgie, Sheldon, and Missy crept out of the house slowly to where Connie was having here cigarette. One Georgie got the keys, we all piled into the car. Sheldon came in wearing Georgie's football helmet and carrying pillows on each side of his small body.

"Why are you wearing my helmet?" Georgie asked.

"I don't expect this to end well." Sheldon replied.

"And the pillows?"

"Same answer."

"Okay seat belts everybody." Georgie said as he fastened his.

"Man I must be crazy." I mumbled under my breath.

"Do you know how to get to the hospital?" Missy asked.

"Yeah. It's right across the street for the Dairy Queen." Georgie said, not letting his eyes leave the road.

"Which one? There's two?" Sheldon pointed out.

"Which one is the one mom takes us to?"

Eventually we found our way to the hospital after following an ambulance.
