The sea was quiet, warm and blue. Schools of fish were moving in bizarre manners as they searched for food.

It was a lovely day in the south pacific and deep beneath it where no man has ever ventured into was where the mermaids and mermen lived. Half humans, half fish, they were. They were ruled my Neptune, god of the sea and the mermaid queen.

Two mermaids, who were supposed to be guarding the trident chamber where the trident, a three headed fork with a blue ruby in its middle was kept, had wandered off to the coral gardens to have a look.

The trident stored the moons powers. The moon kept the balance of the ocean and the creatures that lived within. Whenever the moon was out, the trident replaced the moon, therefore it had to be kept with utmost security.

"Oh Kiara you know we are not supposed to leave our duty post",Nara one of the two mermaids said.

"Nara nothing can happen", she said confidently.

"The only person that would want to steal the trident is faraway in the artic and I don't see how he could possibly be here and we won't notice", she continued.

"But these corals are sleeping, you would just wake them up" Nara said trying to prevent Kiara from taking a further look at then corals.

"Look", Kiara said. "If you are scared about what will happen, you can just return back to the chamber", she continued.

But Nara could not. She could not abandon her best friend. Their relationship had not been a long one.

At the end of the mermaid school, the final year students are given specific duties to do. This will qualify them to be an active member of the mermaid community.

Most mermen are asked to defend the city for intruders and from allowing the outside world from knowing the existence of mermaids while the mermaids are assigned duties like guarding chambers and being maids of the queen.

Kiara loved exploring unlike other mermaids. Her mother was always against her attitude but it was no use, Kiara had a mind of her own. She also wanted to see the line and what's beyond it because no mermaid or merman was permitted to cross the line except those that guarded it.

So Kiara hoped that she would be chosen among the mermen that would guard the line. Unfortunately, she was chosen alongside Nara to guard the trident chamber. Since then, they had become best friends.

"Alright", Nara said relcutantly. "I would see the corals with you".

"Aren't they cute?", Kiara said referring to the corals.

They were one of her favorite sea creatures. Next to that was the sea horse. The animal she detested the most was the great white shark. It was the shark that killed her father.

"Oh yes they are", Nara replied sarcastically

MEANWHILE...................

A clown fish swam into the trident chamber. Suddenly, a bright light shone and a merman appeared in place of the fish.

He laughed the evil laugh and said, "Finally I get this trident after so many years".

He laughed again. As he was about to pull the trident , he experienced a little difficulty an after a long struggled he finally pulled it out but not without the trident causing a huge electric spark that surged through the ocean.

He quickly swam away from the chamber before the guards come looking.

------

"Did you feel that?" Nara asked Kiara.

"Yes I did"

"Are you thinking what I'm thinking?" Nara asked again.

Kiara did not need to reply. Only two things could produce such electricity. Eels and the trident.

There were no eels nearby and it only meant that someone had tampered with the trident.

The mermaids swam as fast as their tails could carry them to the chamber.

Nara entered into the chamber first and when she came out, it was as though she had seen a ghost. All the colour had drained from her face. Nara did not need to talk. Kiara already knew what had happened.

"Don't tell me", she said trying hard not think of the worst.

"It's gone", Nara said. "The trident is gone".

"What are we going to do?", Nara asked after what seemed like an eternal pause.

"We must not let anyone know", she replied.

"But that is impossible" Nara said.

"The trident supports the life of the sea. Its inhabitants will soon start feeling its absence", she added.

"Don't worry, we'll have time", Kiara said.

"How?", Nara asked.

"This is the month of full moon. So for the next four weeks, the moon will be out and I would have been able to find the trident and no one would know".

"Hmmm", Nara sighed. "

This is up to you but I insist that you tell the queen".

"And get into more trouble", Kiara said getting angry because Nara was not supporting her decision.

That was how she was. Always been cautious.

"Well I'm not in this with you. I told we should not leave our duty post but you didn't listen. Now where has it landed us? Don't you get what just happened. The trident is gone as in gone."

"Good", Kiara said angrily. "I don't need you to be in this with me. It's my cross and I will carry it. Afterall, your presence doesn't make my work easier."

"Oh",Nara said shocked and hurt.

"No problem, you can go on without me", she said.

"Fine", Kiara said finally and they went their separate ways.
