The lost trident

Chapter Fifteen

"What are we going to do now?" Kiara asked downcast. "We've failed our kingdom", she continued. "Stop that!" Helen said. They were held captive in what used to be the engine room; tied to bars of iron with chains- new chains.

"I'm sorry", Poseidon whispered. Both mermaids turned to look at Poseidon who was still a bit dazed. Kanner really hit him hard. Kiara wondered how he survived it. "Your apologies are of no use now, what we need is a plan to be free and meet whatever remains of our kingdom", Helen said.

"It's not my fault. He deceived me to getting the trident. Only if I knew that the trident being locked up was for my benefit and that of the kingdom", Poseidon said. He was obviously dazed from the hit. "I think he is talking to himself", Kiara said. No I'm not", Poseidon replied.

Kiara had so many questions she wanted to ask him. "So why did you date Bianca when you knew she was your cousin?" Kiara began. "The assignment was to get close to you", he began. "But you refused to be available. "So I changed plans and became friends with Bianca", he said. "And we were not dating I never asked her out", he continued.

"What about the date?" Helen asked. "I had to play along besides it was meant to make up for Kiara's rude behavior", he said. "How come I didn't recognize you at first", Kiara asked. "It was a spell", he replied.

There was silence for some minutes, and then Poseidon said, "I think I have an escape plan". "How?" the mermaids asked. "Squitty", Poseidon called to his pet giant squid that had been placed under a spell and asked to guard the prisoners (Poseidon, Kiara and Helen). The squid responded to Poseidon. Poseidon locked his gaze with that of the squid and then he began to talk. "You will release us now", Poseidon said. The giant squid began to unlock the chains with its giant tentacles. One by one they became free then Helen said "sun" and the squid froze and stared dreamily at nothing in particular. "Let's go", Poseidon said. They swam as fast as their tails could carry them to the kingdom

As they approached the kingdom, they saw the sharks that had surrounded it. "We are late Nara", Bianca said. "I know", Nara replied.

From where they were, they could hear Kanner's evil laugh. "Neptune, son of Triton, where are you?" Kanner called out as his voice echoed through the kingdom. The merpeople hid in their caves and not a single one of them could be seen except one.

She swam slowly out of her cave to where Kanner stood. As Kanner turned to see who swam out so did the sharks he was controlling them with the trident in his hands. "Yehu", Kanner said softly. "You don't have to do this", Yehu pleaded. "Oh my gosh, that's Kiara's mum", Nara said as Yehu was talking to Kanner. "Shh", Bianca hushed Nara. "Please, Kanner please", Yehu continued pleading. "Yehu my love. Don't plead. You and I will rule this kingdom together. Kiara will be there also and our family will be complete again", he said. Yehu began to cry hoping that her tears will weaken Kanner's resolve to overthrow Neptune.

Neptune came out along with the queen and his warriors. "Finally", Kanner said on seeing them. "Did you miss me", Kanner asked. Neptune kept quiet and looked at him angrily.

Meanwhile, Helen and Kiara had arrived and met Nara and Bianca. They were shocked to see Bianca. "How...how", Helen began to say. "Long story mum; where's Poseidon?" Bianca asked changing the topic. "Look", Kiara said pointing to where Kanner and his sharks were.

A shark had hit the shark on which Kanner sat causing Kanner to loose balance and fall of the shark's back. As he fell, the trident fell of his hands and Kiara dived for it but squitty from nowhere had gotten the trident. "How did he even get here", Kiara asked. Helen created a bubble around Squitty's head and immediately Squitty could not breathe. He loosed his grip on the trident and Bianca went for it. She caught it and gave it to the Neptune.

When Kanner realized what had happened, he knew the game was over. Neptune sent all the sharks back and the merpeople cheered as they came out from their caves. Neptune declared a feast at the palace while Kanner was kept in a prison still awaiting judgment.
