The lost trident

Chapter Nine

“I really enjoyed myself”, Bianca said as they drove back to their house. “Me too”, Andy replied. “How about your parents I didn’t meet them when I came in”, Andy said. “Yea, they were inside”, she replied. “Maybe you should come for our Sunday dinner”, Bianca said. “Tomorrow’s Sunday or next week”, Andy asked. “Tomorrow of course”, Bianca said. “Whoa, I'm not sure I'm ready to meet your parents I mean we just started to”, Andy began to say but Bianca interjected hushing him up. “My parents are humans”, she said. “But why not make it next week”, Andy suggested. “Okay”, Bianca said in agreement.

She was about to open the door when Andy stopped her. “Let me”, he said. He came down and went over to open the door for her. “Good night”, he said when she reached the door. “Good night”, she replied and waved. She continued waving as the car zoomed off. “He’s so romantic”, she said dreamily

She had her tail again, her mum was with her and so was Nara. It looked as though they were talking about something. Then they heard a scream, two screams, three screams and someone screamed sharks!! Nara had a panic attack, Kiara’s mum tried to help her swim out of their cave but they were faced with a shark that glared it teeth hungrily at them. Then another shark was behind. On it sat a merman with the trident in his hands.

Kiara’s mum seemed to recognize the merman as she pleaded with him in a way that showed they were somehow close but he turned away and left them at the mercy of the shark. The share glared its sharp teeth angrily at them. It was about to eat them when the merman holding the trident shouted stop. The shark halted still looking angrily. I can never hurt my family”, the man said.

She woke up from the trance. She had been standing throughout the period of the trance. It was exactly the same like the one she had before except that the merman with the trident said something. Can that be her father?” she asked herself. No, it is not possible she concluded. She adjusted her jacket and straightened her skirt. She glanced at her watch. It was already late, Helen and lance would be worried now”, she thought as she left the ocean.

“Are you sure about what you are saying?” Lance asked. They were in their bedroom discussing about the days event as they always do but last night Lance came in late so Helen didn’t tell him about her encounter with Kanner. She was telling him now. I know what I’m saying and besides the fishing company is called Kanner fish factory”, she said.
“Hmm, that proves pretty much”, Lance said. “I’m very suspicious of that building”, she said. “Have you ever entered into his office”, she asked. “Yea”, he said. “I think you need to spy on him”, she said. “Hey, don’t drag me into mermaid business”, he said.
“Please for me”, she said. “I’m serious, the last time I interfered with mermaid business you know what happened”, he said. “Yea, yea I got myself banished from the pod blah, blah, and blah”. “You are behaving like a baby”, Lance said. “No I’m not”, she said and sighed. “I'm doing this for Kiara”, she said. “I want to do this dear, please support me”, she continued. “Okay, I’ll help you spy and see what’s in his office”, he said. “Thank you”, Helen said excitedly and kissed him on the cheeks. “Let me go and prepare dinner”, she said as she went out of the room.

Bianca, you’re back”, Helen said as she met Bianca drinking water in the kitchen. “Yea”, Bianca replied still drinking the water. “How was it?” she asked. “Everything I could ask for”, Bianca said. “I'm inviting him for dinner next week Sunday”, she continue. “Wow, so fast?” Helen asked. “Mum just get prepared”, Bianca said and went to her room. “Teenagers”, Helen said to herself.

She remembered her merman sweetheart while she was in the mermaid school. It was everything she could ask for but it didn’t work out and during the time of her heartbreak she wandered past the line and found Lance, the fisherman’s son.

She heard the door opened and came back to reality. It was Kiara. “Welcome”, she greeted her. “Thank you”, Kiara said in a low voice. “Are you okay?” Helen asked. “No”, Kiara replied gloomily. “Come lets go for a walk”, Helen said.

The wind was chilly; thankfully they both had their jackets on. “So what’s the problem?” Helen asked when they had walked a little distance from the house. “I keep having this strange dreams whenever I look at the full moon”, Kiara said. Helen kept quiet for a moment then said, “The moon is talking to you”. Kiara looked at her incredulously. “The moon speaks?” she asked. “Yes”, Helen replied. “She speaks through visions”, she added. She’s a she”, Kiara asked again. “Yes”, Helen replied.

“Haven’t you been told the story?” Helen asked. “No”, Kiara replied. “Okay. The moon is the mother of mermaids and mermen. We, merpeople were brought to earth through the affair of Zeus and the moon goddess. It was a secret affair, and when the moon goddess had a child, she named him Triton,” Helen explained patiently.

“After Triton was born, he wasn’t safe anymore with the moon goddess.” “Why?” Kiara asked. “Well, her relationship with Zeus had to be kept a secret and so was the child she bore for him but Venus was on the verge of finding out. So she sent young Triton to the sea and gave him the trident so he could survive. “So that’s why we depend so much on the trident”, Kiara said. “Yes, when the moon is down”, Helen replied. “So back to your visions; what are they?” she asked. “Sharks attacking our city”, Kiara said, her voice filled with fear. “Sharks”, Helen asked. “Yes”, Kiara said and she explained everything she saw in her vision. “And the merman said I don’t hurt family”, Kiara said finally.

“Wow, this is confusing”, Helen said. “Who would team up with sharks, I mean sharks don’t like merpeople for anything”, Helen added. “Except the trident is used to control them”, Kiara said thoughtfully. “That’s true”, Helen said nodding in agreement. “We need to intensify our effort”, Helen said as they turned back to the house.

First of all, the story about Zeus, the moon and triton is purely fictional all made up from my imaginations. So, what do you think Kiara’s reaction will be when she meets Andy during the family dinner?
