CHAPTER FOUR

The ocean was warm; a good day for hunting. She was hungry and was not in the mood for shrimps and prawns which her mum her mum had caught the previous day. She preferred sea weeds and tuna. Her mum was eating when she dashed out of the cave. "To where?" her mum asked but did not get a reply. She shrugged. She had swum far but there was no sight of food. She was beginning to get frustrated when she saw a school of Tuna swimming. She was swimming to catch just two. That would be enough she thought. As she was about eating the ones she had caught, she felt a jab....

"Wake up you sleepy head", Bianca said as she tapped Kiara. "What?" Kiara asked confused. Bianca had been tapping her incessantly. "I said wake up except you want to miss the bus". "Oh!" she exclaimed hitting her forehead with her palm. It was a dream she was not in the ocean hunting for fish, she was on land, in Aqua Ville trying to find the trident and Poseidon. She missed the ocean and the corals. She missed her mum even though she nagged a lot. "There is no place like home", she said with a sigh. "What did you say?" Bianca who was curling her hair asked. "Nothing", Kiara replied quickly. "Why are you doing that?" she asked pointing to Bianca. "Doing what?" Bianca asked confused. "That", she said, still pointing at Bianca. Bianca did not understand at all.

"I mean this", Kiara said again twisting her hair with her fingers. "Oh! You mean curling", Bianca said finally getting it. "Don't you have curlers where you come from?" Bianca asked. She responded negative. "What?" Bianca asked surprised. "We decorate our hair with sea shells", Kiara said. Bianca gave her a quizzical look. She had a weird cousin indeed. "Anyway, I just want to look attractive today", Bianca said offering explanation for why she was curling her hair. "So you didn't want to look attractive yesterday?" Kiara asked. "What do you mean?" Bianca asked. "You didn't curl your hair yesterday", she replied. "Okay" she said with a groan. "There is a new guy in school today so I don't want to look like a dork in front of him and I heard he is attractive", she said with a girlish giggle. Kiara wondered how she knew a new guy was coming to their school. "After all we have not gone to school today", she thought loud. "That's why we have the social media, duh", Bianca replied when she heard her. Please go and get ready or we will miss the bus", Bianca said and Kiara went into the bathroom to get ready.

The school bus was noisy with the students chattering. The guys talked about games and devices while the girls chattered about makeup, movies, dates and of course the new guy. That was the most prominent feature of all girl talk that morning. "I wish he would be in my class", Trisha one of Bianca's friends said. "I heard he's hot", Bianca added. "And he has blue eyes", Becca another of Bianca's friends said. She was crazy about boys with blue eyes and dark hair. Finally they reached the school and went for their class. Half way into the first period, the anticipated new guy walked in. Everything seemed to be in slow motion. Unfortunately, the moment was cut short by the History teacher who hated late student. "And why are you late?" he asked. "I'm sorry" the boy replied in the most appealing low baritone voice one could ever have. "Take a sit", the teacher said and he went to the only available seat which was next to Bianca. "Hi", he whispered to her which made her squirmed. She couldn't talk. She just responded with a smile. Becca had said he had blue eyes but forgot to mention that they were so piercing. Throughout the period and for the rest of the day, Bianca squirmed on her seat and he made occasional glances at her with the 'I know you find me attractive' look.

Meanwhile, something about this new guy in school seemed so familiar to Kiara but she could not just remember and she developed an ill feeling towards him. There was something about his presence she did not like.

"He sat beside me!" Bianca screamed after school as she and Kiara walked to the school bus drawing the attention of other students around. "So?" Kiara asked uninterested. "Wait a second don't you have crushes on boys where you come from?" Bianca asked as she could not understand why Kiara would seem so uninterested in the most gorgeous guy that had ever steeped into the halls of Aqua High. "You can't understand" Kiara said. Truly, Bianca would not understand why Kiara found him so familiar and annoying. There was something up about him, she concluded.

Meanwhile....

Ever since Kiara left for land, the ocean had not been the same for Nara. There was no trident to guard and no one to talk to. She just spent her days swimming round the ocean, where merpeople were allowed to swim. It was another day in the ocean. Everywhere was quiet to her as it had always been. She had gone to see Kiara's mother who had been lonely since her daughter left. The she went for her usual swimming. As she swam, she thought about so many things. She was not from the pacific pod. She was born and brought up in the Atlantic but her parents were banished by the mermaid chief of the Atlantic. The god of the sea, Neptune had accepted them in his own city in the pacific. She was not able to make friends because she was not social. The only friend she had left her besides they were not in good terms before she left. There were so many things on her mind. She had been swimming for some hours now and did not know when she crossed the line. Surprisingly, no guard took notice. She didn't realize that until the warm ocean became cool all of a sudden and dark. The sharp change in environment jolted her from her thoughts. She looked up and behold it was a sunken ship. Not just a sunken ship but a shark infested one. It was the notorious shark city. The sharks have been enemies with the mermaids for centuries. Mermaids were their prey and only one thing could control them -the trident.
Curiosity took the better part of her and she swam inside. It was dark but she could feel anything that obstructed the water waves. As she swam deeper and deeper into the ship, she noticed there were no sharks around. "Have they gone hunting?" she asked herself. And her question was answered when she peeped through a crack on the wall of the ship. All the sharks where gathered around a platform on which two mermen were speaking. One was young looking about her age and the other looked old enough to be her father. She gasped when realization dawned on her. The one with the trident was Poseidon. The other she could not recognize. They were speaking shark so she could not understand. She knew mermaids were taught dolphin language in their schools but shark language was never taught. Poseidon must have stayed for long with the sharks for him to understand their language, she reasoned out. "How did he even leave the artic?" She thought to herself. Now she had to tell the queen what she had seen but before she could swim back. A tentacle had wrapped around her so tight that she found breathing difficult. It was a giant squid.
