The lost trident

Chapter Two

CHAPTER TWO
The Ocean seemed quiet for the past few days. No school of fishes were seen, the corals seemed not to  wake up. Preys and predators kept to their own end. There was some sort of imbalance in the ocean. Kiara had been searching for the trident for the past two days to no avail. The guards at the line had been very difficult to evade. Today was the third day and there was still no sight of the trident. She was getting frustrated by the moment. After swimming round the ocean, she saw something that looked odd. It was the trident, with a fish. Then suddenly the fish turned into a merman. “Poesidion”, she shouted. The merman looked and saw the mermaid calling his name. he didn’t wait to to respond as he sped quickly to the line. Kiara followed suit and they swam pass the line. The guards there did not even know what passed them and they didn’t bother. For all they knew it might be two dolphins playing.
           Finally, the merman got to the shore, a quiet part of the land. He got on land and was about to transform into a man when Kiara shouted “stop”. “What do you want?” Poseidon asked. “The trident”, she replied. Poseidon chuckled. “I have waited all these years for this trident to be in my hands. Do you know how it felt  when my powers where taken away seven years back?”, he asked “I have no time for flashback”, Kiara said “And I have no time for you”, he said and continued his transformation. Kiara raised a water whip, tied his tail and drawed him back into the water. Poseidon held the trident, created a huge electic ball  and directed it at Kiara. Kiara lost grip of her water whip and tumbuled in the water. She was dazed and Poseidon transformed into a human and went away.

“Where are you coming from at this time?” , Kiara‘s mother asked as Kiara entered into the her cave. Mermaids and mermen lived in caves under the sea. “I was looking at the corals”, she lied. “Kiara, How many times will I thank you to be careful. You know what happened to your dad” she said. “Mum please don’t you mention that again. I can never and will never make the same mistakes my father made”, Kiara said raising her voice. Her dad died before she was born so she never knew him. Her mum told him that he was killed by a great white shark. “Young woman”, her mother said sternly “Don’t you dare raise your voice at me”. But Kiara had gone into her own side of the cave.  Some moments later, royal guards from the queen came to their cave. Good day ma, they said. We are looking for Miss Kiara. “Kiara?” Her mother asked. “What has she done again?”, the queen request her presence. Just then Kiara came out and was scared to see the guards. “What is going on here?” she asked trying to feign confidence. “The queen requests your presence”.

“What have you done Kiara ?”,the queen asked. “I’m sorry my queen”, Kiara said. There was some kind of movement accompanied with grumblings of mermaids and Nara was brought in. They shot each other a cold stare. “What were you thinking?”, the queen asked. Kiara didn't respond and Nara kept staring at her tail. Then suddenly, Kiara said, “I know who took the trident”. Everyone in the chamber stared at her. “Who is the person?”,the queen asked. “Poseidon”. The people gasped. “Poseidon is not supposed to be with the trident”, the queen said. One could hear the panic in her voice. Kiara wanted to ask why but the present situation did not permit the queen.
“Poseidon, is the son of Neptune, god of then sea”, the queen began as though she read Kiara’s mind. “When he was ten, we realized he had powers but he began to misuse them by changing into a human, going on land and bullying young children”, she continued “When his father found out, he collected his power to turn human into the trident. Since then he became rebellious and at a point, he began to mingle some outcast like Kanner the one who wanted to kill Neptune and he was banished to the artic,” she said. “But I don’t understand how he got into the kingdom without us knowing,” she said. “He turned into a fish,” Kiara said. “How? ,” The queen asked. What the mermaids and mermen didn’t know was that during  his time with the outcast in the artic, he discovered that he could not only turn into a human, he could also turn into any animal of his choice.

“If Kiara and Nara had been at their duty post, the trident would not have gotten into Poseidon hands in the first place. So as punishment you would have to get the trident from Poseidon. ” “My queen,” Kiara began to protest. “It was my fault that Nara was not at her duty post. Please my queen, I alone should bear the punishment”  “Very well” the queen said. “You have till the full moon to get the trident which I presume is in about three weeks.” “Yes my queen.” “So go and get yourself prepared. This court is dismissed.” All mermaids and mermen in attendance began to leave one by one. “Kiara please wait up,” Nara called as she was swimming away. Kiara waited. “Thanks for having my back,” she said. You’re welcome but that does not mean we are cool with each other,” Kiara said. “I only did that because it was morally right. So piss off.” Nara was hurt to the point that tears started coming to her eyes but Kiara did not even turn back. 
The next day, the queen and other mermaids and mermen came to see her off. “Today,” the queen began. “We send off Kiara to the land of men to bring back the trident from Poseidon.” The queen gave her the power to be able to turn into a woman. After crossing the line,  Kiara was on her own. It was her first time outside her family. She suddenly became homesick and scared. She swam to where she had seen Poseidon transform and came on land. Dragging herself to a safe place to transform wasn’t easy. She now felt the full weight of her tail. She found a shade under a tree and decided to rest there while she transformed. She repeated the words the queen had given to her. “Neptune, god of the sea, grant me the power which I seek.” Immediately she felt light looking down at where her tail used to be, she saw legs. She was awe struck. So she could now finally know what it meant to have legs, to be a human. Stage one complete. Now she had to find clothes. She knew she could not just wander around the land with clams covering her chest. She took some leaves from a tree to make clothes with herself while she looked around the land. “Mhen, these legs are so wobbling,” she said as she walked around the forest. Luckily while strolling, she saw some things on the ground which she presumed were what humans used to cover their nudity. Now was to look for the house where she was supposed to stay.
