The lost trident

Chapter Six

Some days later...

The cafeteria was noisy. Student gathered in groups eating and talking. Bianca and Kiara walked in. Trisha and Becca were out for practice with Andrea. "I think I want to use the restroom", Kiara said as she felt pressure in her bladder. As a mermaid in the sea, she never had to worry about the toilet. The liquid diffused from her body.

During her first days her, Mrs. James had taught her what to say when she felt the pressure building up. She also told her the story of when she first came on land, her husband, then a fisherman's son had told her about the toilet when she urinated on her body. According to her, she thought it was diffusing, only to see her clothes wet and foul smelling. "Okay, don't be long", Bianca said. She collected her food and went to take her seat at the usual table.

"Hey", a rough looking guy said. It was Ronny the school bully. He was in his final year after repeating middle school twice. "This table is for four", he said referring to the table Bianca usually sat on. "And my guys want to sit", he said referring to his henchmen that follow him everywhere he goes. "Excuse but my friend and I usually seat here", she replied confidently even though that was the opposite of how she was feeling.

"So you want to play tough huh?" he asked looking at her manacling. "Leave the girl alone", a soft but firm voice spoke. It was so familiar and when she finally recognized the voice, she didn't want to look back. "It can't be", she thought to herself. And who are you? Ronny asked. "Human right activist; the ladies' man or..." "I'm not sure you want to know", the voice said growing more stern and firm with authority too. Ronny backed down and went to an empty table at the end of the cafeteria.

The moment of truth had finally come. She turned around and it was him. The new guy. "hey", he said in a more friendly tone; very friendly tone. "Thanks", Bianca managed to say while trying to suppress a squeal. "Nah it's nothing", he said with a wave of his hand. She found that attractive. 'May I?" he asked. "Huh?" Bianca asked confused. He gestured towards a sit on the table he had defended for her. "Oh!" she said in realization. "Of course", she said. "So, Bianca right?" he asked.

"OMG, he knows my name", her inner self screamed. Yea", she said trying to compose herself. "And you are". "Andy", he said. Oh! Andy. "So are you new in town or what?" "Actually, I'm staying with my uncle, he owns a fishing company here". "Wow, where were you staying before?" she asked. "With my parent", he answered. "But they are going through a divorce and my uncle didn't want me to experience any of the ordeals." "I'm sorry", Bianca said. "Nah, it's no problem", he said with a wave of his hand. Is that a part of him, Bianca wondered. "So can you tell me about yourself", he said. "Uhm, where do I start". "Anywhere", he said. "Okay, I'm Bianca". "I know that", he said. "Yea", she replied feeling awkward. "I stay at Albert street, that's like a forty five minutes work from here". "That's not far", he said. "I know". "You come with the bus?" she asked. "No, I stay very far", he replied. "How far?" she asked. "Close to the beach". "Whoa, that's far, and you come here every day". "Yea, every day since I started school here". "My uncle usually calls an Uber to pick me up". "Oh", she said. "I'm really grateful for what you did today", she said. "You know you can be grateful by...".

"Bianca!!!" Kiara exclaimed as though Bianca did something she was not supposed to do. "Oh, hey Kiara meet Andy, Andy meet my cousin..." "I have time for your introductions Kiara said clearly angry. Kiara dragged her out of the cafeteria. "Kiara what's wrong with you?" Bianca asked clearly pissed off. I told you I have an odd feeling about this guy. So you are my guardian now. No I'm only telling you that it's not safe to hang out with him. Please stop talking like my mother. Bianca walked out on her. "Why doesn't she understand", Kiara thought to herself. Bianca wait", she said running after her but Bianca had entered a cab.

The cave was so quiet. There was no more Kiara trouble. "Why is life cruel to me?" Kiara's mum asked herself. Her husband had left her and now the only reminder of him, of his existence was gone too. Would she ever find the trident, would she come back? All these questions came flooding into her mind. At least she had Nara to keep her company from time to time. Speaking of that, she had not seen her for two days now. Yesterday and today, "That is so unlike her", she said. She decided to see her parents but was stopped by some mermen as soon as she left her cave. "Good day Marian", the leader of the mermen greeted. "Good day", she replied. "Nara is missing", he dropped the bomb without beating around the bush. He was a straight to the point kind of person. "What?" she asked shocked at the news. "Yes and it was reported that you were the last person she saw". "That's true", she said in agreement. "Am I in trouble?" She asked. "No but you may need to follow us to the council". How she dreaded the council. The council of the mermaid kingdom was a body of all the gods, goddess and chiefs of the mermaid world. Every ocean and sea had a chief. The headquarters of the council was in the pacific, where Neptune the god of the sea was. She swam along with the guards to the royal palace. It was built a very long time ago by Triton, Neptune's father and Poseidon's grandfather. Triton had cause a ship to sink, it was a very beautiful ship called 'the Ivory' named after the owner of the ship, Thomas Ivory. The mermaids always keep the ship clean and polished. When she entered the palace, it was as though the council had been waiting. Neptune was even around. He was back from his trip to the Atlantic. He didn't do the grand entrance he usually does when he arrives from a trip due to the missing trident. If the person who stole the trident knew he was around, he may be harmed. The council were in the royal court which is the dining room of the ship. They sat on high table while Marian was put in a dock. Nara's parents were among the audience alongside other merpeople of high caliber.

"We only want to ask you some few questions about the last time you saw Nara", Neptune began. Yes my lord", Marian said.
