Song: Belong - Cary Brothers

Wake up lonely with you by my side
One more night it doesn't feel
There are movies playing in your eyes
You dream of our fortunes
But you're wrong
I don't belong to you

Dean woke up in the middle of the night and glanced over at (y/n)’s sleeping form. She was sleeping on her stomach and Dean gently caressed her back, through one of his shirts that she loved to wear.

He smiled sadly at her. He didn’t feel like he could stay with her any longer, he felt like he was failing her. She promised him that things were fine, but he just didn’t feel like he could be what she needed.

She dreamt of fairy tales and castles and princes, but Dean didn’t feel like he was her prince. He climbed out of bed, rubbing his eyes and went to the fridge to get a beer.

He perched on the table watching (y/n)’s figure rise and fall with each breath.

The moon is the only friend I have outside
One more drink and I'll be healed
I told you the words and then knew it was a lie
I wish I could offer an appeal

‘Dean?’ her soft voice, sleepily called out to Dean.

‘I’m here baby, go back to sleep, I’ll be there in a second,’ he said, quietly. She nodded and soon her breaths were back to normal.

Dean just didn’t know what to do. He loved her too much to leave her and he loved her too much to stay.

You're wrong
I don't belong
You're wrong
I don't belong to you

Dean finished his drink and sat on the edge of the bed looking down at her. He wanted to believe her words every time she told him that he was enough; that he was her world.

But how could he be, he was just a broken man with no house and no home.

What I'd give for that first night when you were mine, you were mine
Tried with all that I have to keep you alive, alive

He remembered the first time she told him she loved him and smiled fondly. It had been in the middle of the night, limbs tangled and skin to skin contact.

She rested her head on Dean’s chest, a feather light touch across his stomach.

‘I love you,’ she’d whispered nervously.

Back then, Dean hadn’t doubted his actions, he hadn’t thought about if his love was enough. It had been enough for her to just have been his.

I wasn't taught this way
With a thousand things to say
I was born with a broken heart
What I'd give for that first night when you were mine
Thought you were mine

But Dean didn’t know how to love. All of his relationships had been poisonous and he was broken from the very start. He didn’t know how to be the man that she needed.

So I'll put this cigarette to bed
Pull some sheets from off your side

But when she reached out to where Dean should have been lying, he knew he couldn’t just go, he couldn’t break her fragile heart.

He wanted to keep her safe and breaking her heart would just hurt her. He told himself that he would leave another day, one day.

I put my arm around you safe in the night
Still dreaming of fortune

He climbed back into bed and wrapped his arms around her waist. She clung to Dean’s chest and kissed his jaw, still half asleep.

‘I love you,’ she whispered.

Just like she had that night.

But you're wrong
I don't belong
You're wrong
I don't belong

'I love you too baby,' Dean whispered, when she had fallen asleep; tears in his eyes.

You're wrong
I don't belong
I don't belong
I don't belong
