As a huge fan of the book, John Green, and a nerdfighter myself, I had some high expectations going into this. I have to say, my expectations were exceeded. I was a bit nervous about Shailene Woodley as Hazel (I had pictured Ellen Page in my head as Hazel) but I was pleasently suprised. She portrayed her almost perfectly. She was spot on in her attitude, and had my laughing and crying like a maniac. Ansel Elgort... well... that boy. I like him. I have a HUGE crush on him after seeing the movie. I had a small one before, but now I would totally marry him and have his babies, and I don't even want babies. I honestly had no one in mind for Gus, he seemed like this unreachable level of character. I was hoping so much it would not be a major well-known actor, and I was so happy that he was picked. He did a dead-on Gus and I cried right away. All the other actors did great, but what really got me was Laura Dern's interpretation of Mrs. Lancaster. She moved me (and my mother, aunt, and step-mother) to tears. She played the struggling mother so perfectly I was blown away. I was pretty indifferent to that casting decsion before the movie, but now I'm so happy they chose Laura. Excellent. There were some pretty major scenes, quotes, and characters (5 to be exact) missing, most notably, CAROLINE MATHERS! She was not in it! The only major problem I had with the movie that, unlike the book, it focused almost only on Hazel and Gus. In the book, there were many more characters, and a lot more internal conflict, and differing opinions. That's my only complaint. But yeah, I've seen it twice already, once at the premiere and once earlier this evening. I cried like a baby both times, and I can no longer listen to the soundtrack without sobbing uncontrollably. I really really loved it. My new favorite movie. I know I might get a little backlash (even my friend Beth, who is almost a bigger fan that I am, not quite, but close, didn't like it THAT much. She still did, from what she said, but I LOVED it.) but I really think it was well done. I picked up the book after watching the movie the 1st time, and was so happy to see that I could read the book and certain scenes with my own mental imagine intact, the movie's interpretation not taking over. I give it a big infinity out of 5 stars. Okay? Okay.
